Hi,

I've two 4 week old chicks. Is it too late to give them medicated starter feed?

Has this got the medication in to prevent cocci : http://www.millbryhill.co.uk/small-...d-664/dodson-horrell-starter-crumbs-20385.htm

And can you also link some that have it in please. I am trying to find a 5kg bag as I currently only have 2 chicks so 10 or 20kg seems like a waste as I doubt they would eat it all.

Any replies would be greatly appreciated! :D

I would buy a 10 kg bag. You'd be surprised how much they eat, especially while they are growing. It should not be wasted.

Amprolium is what is normally added to feed to slow the growth of cocci. It stays in the chicken's gut, is barely absorbed, then the cocci take it up and it prevents them from using thiamine, which kills them or else prevents them from multiplying, I forget which.

I suspect the organic acidifier is organic apple cider vinegar, which is said to be good for chickens (and people.) It is a probiotic, at least in its liquid form, with the mother. I've never heard of its having any effect on cocci.

Here, you can buy chick feed locally that has amprolium, at a farmer's or feed and seed store, pet store, or many hardware or grocery stores. Actually it's hard to find chick starter without amprolium here. It's essentially harmless, doesn't even affect the eggs if a laying hen eats it, so I don't know a good reason to make chick starter without it. It shouldn't be hard to find online if you wish; I know Amazon carries some.
