A little too young to tell for sure, but from the wide white barring, I think your hunch is correct

Yes, that is a cockerel. Males in the barred plumage coloration have wider white bars. The females have wider black bars.

thanks for the replies everyone, we bought two of the BR's and they are very different from each other already. All our girls 4 in total have little tail feathers, their wing feathers and chest feathers are all much more advanced then the one in the picture so this is another reason I'm saying "it's a boy!!" lol
