Memorial Day Weekend Turkey Hatch...We have a hatch!! Pics Heavy

Well it looks like you have thanksgiving and Christmas covered for this year. Get yourself some heritage breeds like Narragansett or Bourbon Reds, what ever you fancy and have fun. They are great to have around, except for my EVIL B@$!^%D tom. I'd eat him if he wasn't such a nice looking bird.

Well, I just candled my eggs and I have 9 infertile turkey eggs and 2 with blood rings. The rest all have movement and lots of veins. Guess my fertility isn't very good yet, but this is my first batch of turkey eggs for the year. It's OK because I have another batch of turkey eggs to throw in tomorrow night. It will be a staggered hatch, but I have a second incubator as a hatcher so after the first hatch I can move those into the hatcher.

Pics of my set up

I keep them right next to my computer. This room has a very stable temperature

Just candled our eggs today (with my new homemade candling box

), and out of 22, 7 were infertile. cracked one open and nothing, the albumen was a little milky, but no development at all (infertile from the get go). these eggs are coming from 3 hens of one of my dad's friends. i'm wondering if one of his hens is infertile, as these eggs are all from one week. if the one hen was infertile, all her eggs were infertile, this would explain it perfectly.

the others are all developing nicely, could see the chicks moving

i also threw in my sussex eggs (about a dozen) last sunday morning; turkey eggs were set the saturday before..

Seems that my oldest hen is infertile as well. All of her eggs have been clear after being in the incubator for ten days. I have seen my evil tom breed her so that isn't the problem. All other other eggs have been fertile from my three other hens. I need to post some candling pics.

these are not the best pics, but they are what I have for candling. I have a staggered batch in my incubator.

What I believe to be a Peafowl egg at two weeks. It's big, it's white and doesn't appear to be a turkey egg.

A EE mutt egg at two weeks. Not much to see since it is filling up quick.

and a turkey egg at three weeks. Same thing, not much to see. The egg is full my poult.

So far I have 18 EE mutt eggs due on Memorial Day weekend. 9 turkey eggs due on Memorial Day weekend. 10 turkey eggs and 1 peafowl egg due on June 6. I also 2 turkey eggs and 1 peafowl egg due on June 13. I still have a pile of eggs I need to get in there or sell.

Sweet!

You're set to hatch this weekend, is it?

We've got our first set due June 4th, along with the light x coronation sussex i threw in a week after we started the royal palms.

after the 7 being bad from the first set, we've still got 15 going. i made a candling box with a 100W (well, it's the flourescent, think it's actually like 65) bulb, and all the eggs are still alive and moving

all but one of my sussex are working, too.

either one of the hens hadn't been visited by the tom, or the one that was infertile was the one that was killed, because out of the second hatch, only 3 were infertile out of 14.

i'd take some pix (or try, at least), but the incubator is over at my dad's house, and i have yet to grab my camera before i leave home

update us after you hatch this weekend.

Out of my first 20 eggs that I set 9 were not fertile and 2 were quitters which left me with 9 to hatch this weekend. Out of 20 EE mutt eggs 16 are fertile and growing nicely. I put in 18 turkey eggs and 2 peafowl eggs a week later. Out of the 18 turkey eggs 17 are growing well with 1 quitter so either my tom was visiting all four hens early on or his fertility is going up. We had a late spring and it seems it may have had an effect on the tom getting busy. Of the 9 turkey eggs going into lockdown 8 show good movement and 1 I'm not sure of, but I'm putting it in the hatcher anyways. They go in tomorrow night. Good luck on your hatch.

Last night when I put them into lockdown in the hatcher I candled them and noticed I had one that internally pipped and another that was on the verge. A little while ago I heard a peep, peep, peep and I saw I had a pip in one egg. Day 27, so at least a couple are early.

Yup, very ready, just had one hatch...not the first one to pip, the second pipped and zipped in about 45 minutes...I'm getting a big peep, peep, peep as she is getting her legs under her.

here are some new pics. I take way too many pics.

although there was a little bit of blood during pipping the poult came out fine even though a day early with what looks like a fully absorbed yolk. And VERY loud peeing. You can see the other pipped egg in the lower left hand corner.
