One of our hens died last night. She was a sweet and loving hen, though shy at first. She was taken from us by a dreaded predator. She got too curious and stuck her head out of the chicken wire, and in turn, it got bit off. I miss her dearly. She was a gorgeous hen as well.

This is the last photo of her, which I took on Friday morning. She’s the white one. Here’s some more photos of my sweetheart

This is when the flock followed me while I was sitting on the porch.

This is when they were taking a dust bath. (Didn’t quite work, the ground was frozen)

And that’s it. Also if anyone knows what breed Fern was, we’re planning to get a new one so we’d like to know.

Fern is such a beautiful name, to go with such a beautiful hen. I’m sorry you lost her. Losing chickens is really hard. Don’t let anyone tell you that “it’s just a chicken”. Because it’s not ‘just a chicken’, she’s your companion. Just remember that everyone on BYC is here for you :hugs
RIP Fern. May she run in a field of warms and corn :(

Thank you, it’s nice to know people care <3

Oh I'm so sorry. So very hard to loose our dear pets and companions. Especially so young and to a predator ❤️ I hope you are able to find peace. They hold a very special place in our hearts that is hard to explain to those who haven't had them as pets. RIP Fern.
Yeah, people don’t understand how sweet and intelligent chickens are

They certainly do not. I think many people also haven't experienced hand-raised chickens either - their personality blooms when you give them so much care and freedom to express it (unlike large scale production hens, that though often sweet, take a lot of care and attention to gain confidence and revive personality).

Im so sorry about Fern. That's a horrible way to die, but It sounds like she had a great life! Fern looks to be an Easter Egger hen. Easter Eggers are all different, so If you want one like her, I would try and get another chick that looks like how she did when she was a baby.

They’re just like any other pet, they need attention and love too

Yes. It was also my Grandmother's middle name (she was a beautiful person!). I have thought about naming a chicken Fern someday, if I have one that "lives up" to it. If I do, I will think of your wonderful girl.

I'm so sorry you lost your friend. Hugs. :hugs

RIP, Fern.

We’re thinking of getting an olive egger or a lavender Orpington (Orpingtons are the sweetest)
