I am opening this thread because I am noticing that ALL, and when I say ALL I mean ALL, but ALL, the chicks I hatch are males! We are 4 brothers in the family but I would have never imagined that the virus would have spread to my quails too! Incredible!

I know that in reptiles, incubation temperature influences embryo sex...but in birds?

Nichrome, check out this article. My hens haven't reached full maturity, but when they do, I'm going to attempt this and report back. My main purpose for raising quail is for their eggs. My last hatch, I endedup with 18 roos and 12 hens, so this could increase my egg count. Here is an interesting paragraph from the article:

"The chilling technique only changes the sex of 10 per cent of males into females, although if these birds are then crossed with normal males an all-male brood results".

I don't know if this will work with quail, but I'm willing to give this a try.

It was cited in an Interesting article about temp spikes during incubation of bobwhites up/over 120f and % survival. It takes 38m for a bobwhite egg to reach ambient temp and 50% survive 1 hour at 120.... wow

What I have read instead that when chilling the eggs, female embryos are more resistant so in reality you are not affecting the sex of the embryo but killing some of the male embryos!

Nope, this research indicates that it takes those that are sorta in the middle (effeminate males? Least dominate? ) and makes um female.

It would be fun to do with Bobwhites, I wonder if they saw any changes in the last paper, gotta read it
