I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I have to agree with other posters thinking it was some sort of predator. I remember when our smallest bird was killed by a raccoon, I found her body on the ground, and thought maybe she was pecked to death by the other birds, then it hit me immediately that was not the case--it was indeed a predator who did it. I will never forget how one of the birds named Sweet Pea came out of the coop staring at her remains. Sweet Pea tried for two nights afterwards to escape and not go into the coop during the night. It does not seem likely another bird would do what was described--but a predator would. The male is probably just confused as to what has happened.
