Mental Health?

I work at a cancer treatment center. It can be very draining seeing someone you grow fond of going downhill. My chickens give me something to look forward to.

I get up in the morning and go out to feed and water them. I come home in the evening to find eggs waiting on me. I bring them a treat and they all geather around me to grab bites. I sit on my deck and watch their little world with delight.

It kind of keeps me grounded.

LisaJean, glad to hear that your chickens are part of your support group. Hopefully you'll get back on track soon. I think chickens are great pets because they are not demanding, therefore, will not overwhelm you. Karen

I've been under a tremendous amount of pressure lately. We are opening a new business and trying to sell our other store. Money is extremely tight and my 4 kids are not understanding. I chewed out a telephone company installer this morning. I'm sooo not me. It has poured rain for several days now. My husband is just freezing up under the pressure. I would've got a job months ago had I known this procedure was going to take so long. I feel terrible and it's starting to affect my health.

A FEW SECONDS IN THE COOP AND I'M FINE AGAIN. I love my chickens

They bring me back to a healthy level of insanity and restore my serenity. Makes me think of Bob Marley singing, "Don't worry, bout a thing. Cos every little thing's gonna be alright."

There is just something so appealing about them. They don't ask for much, unlike other animals. They keep me grounded.

hsm5grls, I will deliver them for you if you can find them. She is only a few hours from me and I wouldn't mind at all. I am also a nurse with a back problem, sounds like we would have a lot to talk about and I would love to play Santa. Let me know, Suz

A few hours is quit far. But I appreciate it. I was thinking of getting her two started pullets or maybe some hens. Something that is beyond the baby care faze and giving little gifts in the morning. That way she will be excited about getting up in the morning and looking for eggs. She always used to call and tell me how many eggs she had in the morning. I am truly worried about her dhe just seems to have given up. If you hear of any hens that need homes in that area I would appreciate a heads up though. Thakk you.

I LIVE IN HUMBOLDT COUNTY!!!! I would be glad to help. I have sources of started pullets and would be very happy to work with her and get what she needs ( I have plenty of extra feeders, waterers, etc.). I will email you.

Sandra,
You are such a sweet heart for doing this. I know riodell is out of your way and I can't beleave how you offered your time to help. My mom was so happy at the thought of having chickens again.
I can't thank you enough.

Just found this thread, and I'm so happy I did. I have been wanting to get a few chickens for several years now, but DH was not really open to the idea. Then last year we visited friends who have chickens, and had the best scrambled eggs ever for breakfast - his opinion. I've been building on that ever since. I was planning on getting started this last Spring, but Real Life got in the way, and has been causing problems ever since - DH has been diagnosed with 3 different cancers over the last 8 months, and we are still in the midst of treatment (but things are looking good). At one point he said that I should think about what I might like next year, to balance out all the worry etc. from this year. He was, I'm sure, thinking about something expensive and frivolous. But I said "chickens!". He said that as long as he doesn't have to build the coop he's fine with it. He said I should get someone in to build it, but with all the good ideas I have got from BYC I think I'll be able to manage on my own. I'm pretty sure though that once I actually start, Mr "Build it Yourself" will be right there telling me how to do it better

. I have been imagining the hens as being therapy for me, and, in fact, just doing the planning has been a huge help in giving me other things to think about than DH's cancer. Its so nice to hear that I am not the only one thinking "therapy", and even nicer to learn that chickens are still therapeutic even after they have graduated from "planned for" to "actually here" LOL.

ORCHICK- By all means build it yourself. That's half the fun. I have learn how to use a drill and a circular saw of all things. I'm planing a new coop next spring for my new additions.
