Mentor, OH - want to raise chickens! Who's with me?

If put to a vote, would you vote to allow a maximum of 3 laying hens per half acre?

I live in Mentor, Ohio and my kids REALLY want to raise chickens. However, when I called the city they informed me that we are not zoned for chickens. I want to change this but I have absolutely no idea how to go about it. We have plenty of land and plenty of room for at LEAST 3 chickens (I could understand the 'no rooster' policy). Does anyone know how to start the process?

Thanks for letting me know, I haven't been on here much but I haven't seen other Ohioans either :)

In the city of Mentor Ohio, you need at least 2 acres of land and the coop must be at least 75 ft from your neighboring homes. Check the City of Mentor's codified ordinance.

We really want to raise backyard chickens in Mentor also, and would like to see the zoning changed so that those of us with less than 2 acres aren't shut out from it. I know of a couple of other people that are interested also.

I think we need to go before city council to try to get it changed, but I'm not really sure.

I wish we could! I want chickens for myself to have my own eggs and I was very upset to find out you need 5 acres to do so. Ugh

I would vote for a minimum of three, as chickens are way too social to be restricted in such a way. Add to this the fact that if you are looking for egg production you will be limiting yourself and your family/neighbors.
