Merry Christmas & Happy New Years!

Yes we've maybe had three since September. They are new layers. This one just looked crazy long and it worried me.
I told hubby I thought he should enclose them when they moved. He said he would. Thanks!

Young layers often have to work the bugs out of the machinery. One-off glitches are almost never anything to worry about. :)

I'm guessing that they like the enclosed space up there because it's more private than the open bin. Can you rig some kind of enclosure around the intended nests so that they'll have that cozy feeling they're looking for?

I think you could easily screen off the area where you don't want them -- even plastic mesh would do since you're just containing chickens not warding off predators.

That last photo is a shellless egg. Are these new layers? It's a common glitch that you don't need to worry about if it only happens occasionally. :)
x2 all this. Any sort of screen to block off the upper area will do, from chicken wire to plastic mesh to bird netting stretched taut.

To make the nests more inviting, some sort of lid to give it an enclosed feel should do the trick. A piece of wood angled over the top (to prevent birds from sitting on it) would work just fine. A sort-of example from my nest box, where I have the lid hinged to the wall:

And yes the mystery egg appears to be just a shellless egg, though if you want to be sure you can cut it open to check. The inside of a typical lash egg will look like layers of the same rubbery, cheesy material that's on the outside, with no white or yolk.
