Mesh size

Going to be starting my first coop soon. Just curious what size mesh should i go with. Will 1' chicken wire be strong enough or should i go with 1/2 " hardware cloth. There are raccoons and stray cats in the area.

raccoons love chicken wire!!! they stick their thievy little hands and grab their dinners!!!! No chicken wire please... It will be more expensive to buy hardware cloth, but if you want to keep your birds... it's worth it. I like 1/2"

on my chicken run i used hardware clothe on the sides and chicken wire on the top seems to be working out fine for me.
