Okay, so I just got a metal base heater, and it never occured to me that it was only for metal waterers (Excuse my blonde-ness), will it still be safe to keep my plastic waterers on it?

No, it's not. The plastic may become deformed from heating, and heated plastic is also toxic, so it will poison your birds water.

Some are safe with plastic, some are not. Proceed carefully.
