Hello All!! I hope everyone is having an awesome Saturday!! I have a question about a chicken coop. The house we are moving to in about a week or so has a chicken coop that we will be using for our chickens. However the people that were living there started building nesting boxes and converting a metal storage building that is fairly big not huge but like a 10 x 18 into a chicken coop. My question is will a metal building get too hot? I live in Maidens,Va so it gets plenty hot in the the summer?

Yes, metal will trap the heat in and make them extra hot. Does it have a lot of windows?

Set a thermometer in there and check it often. Are you planning on them spending the majority of their day in the coop or out in the run/free ranging?

If it will just be to sleep in, I would think it will be fine, just add windows, but if they will spend the majority of their day in there, it probably won’t be a good idea.

I know my brooders are in metal tin waterer buckets (like in TSC) and those get hot quick! If I don’t have the buckets in complete shade my chicks would probably get heat stroke.

Despite the downsides mentioned, metal also has it's upsides.

You'd need to insulate the roof at least to prevent condensation, but with adequate ventilation a metal shed can be bone-dry, termite/carpenter ant free, and impervious to the various things that destroy wood.

The key is ventilation. Taking 6-12" or so of siding off at the top of the walls (hopefully, there's a good roof overhang, otherwise you'll need to add some kind of awning or louver to keep the rain out, and putting large vents at the top of the gables will solve the "metal shed = oven" problem.

If your winters are mild enough you could even remove the siding completely from the wall that faces the run and replace it with wire. :)

Thank you all for the responses. Those are all great points. It was definitely my concern that it would heat up. I definitely like the thought of being able to convert the building and it sounds like its possible with enough ventilation and fixing the condensation issues. To answer the questions my plan would be to create a run that connects to the other chicken coop and run since they are in direct line with each other. I certainly plan on all of the chickens being able to hit the run throughout the day and put them up in the coops at night. Fortunately for me and the chickens I work from home as well as my wife is home also. So from what has been said it seems it could work. Especially from your ideas KillerB I could remove some of the panels and replace with hardware cloth and as far as that goes I could replace some panels with some type of improvised vented panels all the way around that I could climate control year round. Thanks so much for the ideas. I will update in the future what I do with it. Haha haven't even bought my first chickens yet and already making room for expansion. haha.
