In case you are considering less than drastic (ie raising the roof!) remember that moisture is everywhere inside your coop. Just because the wood walls aren't cold/conductive enough to form drops, they will become moisture laden. And let's not forget the point, they ARE birds, and lots of fresh air is what they need. If you smell ammonia in the coop, that IS IT. Moisture leads to ammonia production and trapped air keeps it in, and your birds might get sick, or decide to move somewhere else....

I’m just north of you between Flint and Saginaw. When my hubby build our coop I was concerned with our seasonal temperatures and how to keep my birds from frying in the summer yet not freezing in the winter. Our coop has a metal roof also. He put Up OSB board topped with pink insulating sheets and then the metal roofing panels. Our enclosed run also has metal roofing panels but no additional underlay. Seems to have done the trick for us. Good luck. Sorry your contractor did a poor job on your coop.

I would consider putting some floor vents in your coop, more ventilation is better than not enough, if I was in your shoes, I would remove the metal roofing, and put plywood down, then put the metal back on, then put more ventilation in, and never recommend that builder.

Be absolutely sure whether or not you need roofing paper between the plywood sheeting and the metal roof. Decades age I was a roofer for a while and I think that this is true. Also raising the metal off the wood/paper might provide needed moisture control.

I am only part way thru the msgs (page 2) so this may have been discussed ... from your pictures it appears that your roof is flat. Is so, it could help enormously if you elevated one end. Also some spacing for ventilation at the metal roof ends; maybe an on edge 2x4 with 2 or 3" thru holes (cover with screen).

Your coop guy didn't do you any favors.

Hi, and thanks! Yes the pitch was mentioned, but not mine. Oh trust me I will not use him again or recommend him EVER! I will mention the pitch to my brother (my handy guy) when we rip the metal off. How would I raise the metal off the plywood?

I have ducks and floor roosting silkies, won't the floor vents cause a draft as the main entrance is the side that gets all the wind and weather. (snow/rain)

My silkies were raised with a radio so I'm sure they would love a big screen!

Install 1x3 firing strips on top of the plywood, then screw the metal to those. As mentioned earlier make sure to tar paper the plywood, then install the firing strips

I have a metal roof, but I live in California. It's been cold for us at night (30°) - not very cold at all by comparison - and days in the 60s and 70s. I thought for sure there'd be condensation on it. But there hasn't been. Dry as a bone. I'm so grateful for our climate.

That said, I would have installed the insulation simply because it gets so hot in the summer. I may do that in the spring with a vapor barrier...
