It will be interesting to see how this performs over the winter.
I can see it having some insulative properties, but don't think it will overcome certain conditions completely.
I absolutely see where you are coming from, it is a thin layer of rubber on cold metal. I am still going to cut the styrofoam sheets too.
 
And all this leg wetting advice I give, comes from a guy who has a hen in his room, in an animal carrier. Worried that my hen is sick, and badly molting... no feathers. I'm keeping her inside where it's warm. Because the Bible says "Do unto others as you would have done unto you" I would want to be warm and comfortable.
