I just put my flock of 18 into their new coop a week ago, they seem to be doing wonderfully. Today I dropped a metal nut and couldn't find it, so I brought in a big magnet and you can imagine my horror when the magnet came up with thousands of tiny metal shavings and metallic rocks! I am terrified, are my babies going to die? They are 5 weeks old and super happy and active so far...
The sand was purchased from a sand and gravel place nearby. It should just be a sand and gravel mix, no idea how metal shavings would be in it.

Are the rocks something just containing iron? That's fine. The metal shavings, not so good. Call your sand supplier and ask/ complain!
Is there a geologist available? I sure don't know...

I am guessing the rocks are just naturally ferrous... but the shavings have me super worried! I am thinking about pulling magnets through the entire 1 1/2 yards of sand. That will be hard and time consuming. 😬

That's actually pretty cool - the metal shavings trust me my chickens have eaten way worse and that, I saw one eating a cigarette but once lol
