Metronidazole dosage for turkeys??

Hi everyone, new person here......

I have been reading and reading and I have found so many different dosages for Metronidazole for a turkey with blackhead. My 2 guys are about 10 weeks old and quite large. The are Double breasted bronzed guys. I am ready to medicate them NOW. I just need to use the correct amount. I can easily dose them buy mouth and I would rather do it that way and get it all in at one time per dose. So what amount do I use? My tablets are 250mgs. These guys are my pets and I can`t loose them. They free range on my 30 acre farm with a few chickens. Thanks for your help.

This is from the AAAP Avian Disease Manual:

TREATMENT
There is currently no approved medication for treatment of histomoniasis in food animals. Small
groups of birds not being raised for consumption can be effectively treated individually with metronidazole at a dose of 30 mg/kg orally SID for 5 days. Antihelmentic treatment may help suppress the population of cecal worms.​

You'll also need to de-worm them with something like fenbendazole 10% (Safeguard/Panacur). I dose mine at 50mg/kg by mout and repeat in ten days.

Ok thanks for the info, I have a question. well first I am realizing that they need to be wormed chemically... (new to this)... anyway I have been feeding everyone diamateous earth in their feed. Would that be considered worming them? I add a decent amount and they eat it all.

Not a chance! I tried it, waste of money, now I use fenbendazole.

Just thought I should add that I have given my poults and peachicks metronidazole up to 60mg/kg, so I think it's pretty safe. If you don't see improvement in 2-3 days, you might also have to treat for a secondary infection.

For the last 4 days or so I have been treating with cayenne pepper (out of desperation waiting for the med. to arrive) and I must say that with that they have improved tremendously. But I feel that I want to use the "big guns" approach because my turkey babies are so precious to me/us. And I want to make for sure that they are out of the woods. They are eating, better now because of the pepper. They are not for food, and only pets as are the chickens. I enjoy all my outside critters so much. Thanks for taking the time to help me. I`m ordering the worming as soon as I post this. I want my guys to have everything they need.


Ok, confused, fenbendazole is sold for horses, dogs, cats, fish etc... how do I buy it, is it just for chickens/turkeys? What type do I get for chickens and turkeys?
