metrowest MA

Hi I am from metrowest too!!! Blackstone, MA.
Two months ago we deciced to get chickens. My husband made a coop. Its called the Egg lady and is shown on the coop designs page. We have 3 barred rocks. 2 California whites and 2 silkies. I am worried about the winter months. When there is a foot of snow out there we will have to worry about the water freezing. Do you know what you are going to do? I'm thinking about putting a light bulb in a cinder block under the water bucket. Unless we come up with another way.

Any way the kids are so excited about going out to get the eggs its all worth it.

Hi Green5! I'm hoping that in the winter, it will stay above freezing in the coop & that the water won't freeze. My DH insulated the coop w/ r13 insulation & I plan to do the deep litter method, so I hope that will keep the coop warm enough to keep the water from freezing. Chicks arrive next week! Gotta work on the brooder & get it ready for them to come! I have 8 chicks comming from my pet chicken. This is gonna be the LONGEST week!!!

ErinM, what do you have in your flock?

THere are a couple up coming event in MA. THe June 5 boston show is in Oxford and the day before a Chickenstock in townsend. Anyone going?

I'm looking for a few marans hens--they are as scarce as hens teeth! Will probably need to incubate some eggs; buying 25 pullets will put DH over the edge. Feed prices going too high.

Hi. I am new to the Southbridge area and have found out that one has to own 5 acres to even own a chicken. has anyone succesfully changed their towns ordinences before? I am looking for all support, info and help. I may have to give away my birds. I am so sad. Wish me well at the Planning Meeting this Tuesday night. thanks

Good luck!

Land use is always a compromise; I haven't been thru this but I support your cause!! What "arguments" are you addressing to change the ordinance?

DO focus on being professional and polite. DH has been to many of these meetings!
