Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

coop de doo those fuzz balls are so cute, my fuzz balls are a week old yesterday and the first batch will be 4 weeks old monday, I will get pics and post later. Just wondering if you are adding acv to your water? we got pasty butts with the first batch and then I read in another thread here to add 1 tsp acv per qt of water, it cleared up pasty butts and no pasty butts with the week old babies since I added the acv along with the vita stuff from the start.
I have one with a pasty bum - caught it early and then used vaseline to prevent more sticking. I've had good luck with that method in the past - however I will definitely look into the ACV because prevention is so much better!

To all of those who have lost chicks - my sincere condolences. We lost our first hen over the winter - can't imagine losing more than one

Pip: You were right, the dog was back this morning, here is a copy of the update on my chicks, if some things don't apply here it's because I was mentioning some of their advice.

To everyone on this thread: I feel the same about your chicks and chickens, "all one flock".

------------------------------------------------------------

Update:
The Golden Laced Polish did not make it thru the night

BO - stands with eyes closed, not noticeable deep wounds, will not eat or drink, but does walk around if I bother her. Seems to just want to sleep and one eye stays closed, maybe blind in that eye. Thinking maybe he bit her head but only wound is at the ear and very small. Maybe more internal? I thought maybe she was blind in the one open eye, but she did walk towards the water, but only drank a little as I dropped it in her beak. So I think that she can see out of the open eye. I am not sure if she can open the other. She won't eat, even tried to feed her scrambled egg, but won't eat it.

BR/Google - Still cannot stand, her right side is hurt, I had to cut away feathers and skin that were attached by a thread of skin, a huge piece of skin is missing. I can see her right thigh and part of her upper leg. She does keep trying to stand. She had little, very little to eat and drink this morning. She ate a lot of scrambled egg and has drunk the most water of them all. She keeps trying to stand but still has trouble.

BR/Oreo - She'll walk around if I let her, she has a back wound that looks pretty bad, about the size of a silver dollar. It still looks moist.

Blue Cochin- She will not eat or drink and also has a back wound, hard to tell with her with so many feathers. I did clean and apply ointment to the one wound I found.

Each one now is either in or under their separate laundry baskets. We have a large dog crate that we're going to put them in inside the coop this weekend and figure out a way to separate them.

We saw the dog again this morning going back for more, evil dog. I called Animal control and they came out to try and catch it. Said if they did not catch it that they would set a trap for it. My husband tried to catch it but it runs from him. We do not own a gun.

I have been reading all your posts and thank you, I've been following your info. For those who have gone thru this too, I feel for you, I wish I did not know how you feel, but I do now. Such senseless killing, a massacre. So sad. My daughter has been traveling this summer and she does not know yet, I hate to tell her and spoil her vacation, but she has told me before when we've had cats and dogs die, that she wants to know. She is 19, the Polish that died last night, Elvis was her chicken. Elvis was a girl.

I can't remember who offered the rooster to me, thank you, but we were not planning on having a rooster for awhile. This is all new to me, keeping chickens. I've had much more experience with chickens then I would care to in the past day.

I put in a call to our dogs vet and they are supposed to call me back about a place that will have the supplies that I need. I'm still looking around for supplies too.

The four unharmed chickens are scared to even go from the coop to the run, can't blame them. I went and visited them and gave them some treats make sure they had water. They have taken in the little white rock 8 week old like one of them, they used to pick on her, so good news there. Poor little white rock, Daisy was looking around in the chicks safe area for her sisters.

If any one has any more advise, it is appreciated. Thanks for the advise about not using the triple antibiotic or about reapplying the peroxide. If I do not find nu stock or something as good today I will try the cornstarch, etc.

If any of this makes no sense, sorry, working on little sleep. I could not shut off my brain last night. I gave myself the needed day off of work today and canceled all weekend plans to catch up on rest and help the 4 injured.

Triple antibiotic should be perfectly fine to use as long as it does not have a "-caine" type pain reliever in it. I believe Neosporin is safe, but look carefully at the label before using it! Hydrogen Peroxide shouldn't be used more than once, if that's what you're getting at in your post. Sounds like most of the advise you're getting is sound.

Try to keep track of how much the BO weighs and make sure she isn't losing too much weight (you can do this by just lifting her every day if you don't have a scale you can use). You may have to resort to force feeding or tube feeding if you can't get her to eat on her own. She needs to keep her strength up. For now, I would suggest mixing up some vitamin/electrolyte water for her to drink to make sure she's getting something through her system. Tube feeding info here and here. When I had a hen that wouldn't eat, I force fed her by blending chicken feed, scrambled egg, and enough water to make it a smooth paste, then pulled her beak open and used a syringe to put it in her mouth. Either way, you may need a second pair of hands to help out.

This thread is about a hen who was attacked by a dog and it sounds like her wounds were similar to some of the wounds on your birds: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...nd-gashed-muscle-look-help-advise-please-pics * * GRAPHIC PICTURES! * *

Keep strong, your work will pay off in the end! :hugs

Thanks, I will be doing this soon if she does not eat. The BO is the one chicken attached to my husband and he got her to drink a drop or two and we opened up her mouth and put a meal worm in it and she ate it before the water. She also ate a little speck of egg. The BC, Gizmo has drunk a drop as well.

The BR's Google and Oreo are both eating and drinking. The one I have the most hope for now is Oreo, she acts like a normal chicken. Google seems the most damaged but is eating and drinking too and wants to get up but can't.

I have the electrolytes and I am going to put it in a squeeze bottle and force feed them drops of water. If that works the food is next, thanks for the ideas.

I'm hanging in there now, my initial shock has warn off and I am very focused on getting them better.

I've probably thought about you and your chickens 100 times today. Glad Google and Oreo are eating and drinking. Hopefully that means they are on the mend. If you can get the other 2 to have the water/electrolytes I'm sure that will help a lot.
I'm so sorry about Elvis and poor Daisy losing all her sisters like that. But at least the others accepted her and now she is one of them. She must have some good street smarts to be able to get away from that dog! I hope they can trap him so you don't have to worry about him coming back again.

It sounds like you are on a mission and you have a lot of good advice to help you to help the hurt ones. Keep us posted.

Oh Lynn... I just saw your post and I am absolutely heartbroken for you.

I am so very sorry and I hope you are doing okay. I'm sending lots of positive thoughts and hugs your way.

Thanks everyone, all your kind thoughts are appreciated and please do not let me stop this thread from all the cute chick and chicken pictures. It is a nice break from all this mess I am going through now.

Update:
I applied the Nu Stock on all the wounds.

My Blue Splash Cochin, Gizmo seized and died a half hour ago. She had just a small wound, but never wanted to eat or drink.

I did get my BO, Big Mama to finally swallow some water and wet food. Not much, but it's a start.

The BR, Google with the missing skin is still eating and drinking some, but looks a little worse still.

The other BR, Oreo seems very alert and normal except for the wound.

The four in the coop seem to be living in fear, they are keeping themselves in the coop. All of the unhurt survivors were the ones lower in the pecking order, I think they are not sure what to do now. I've gone out and made sure that they eat and drink, I had to pull two down from the roost to come and eat and drink in the run. They ate a lot and drank a lot, I guess I'll have to do this for them for the next few days. Until they get used to this new flock. It probably will help getting the sick ones in there too, we'll see who makes it through tonight.

Lynn I'm so sorry about Gizmo and Elvis. I thought about you and the birds all day today. I really hope everyone else makes it, I'd hate to see you loose anyone else. I'm sorry I can't be more help but I'm really new to all of this..

That's okay, very new at this too.

Update:
I moved the one in shock, my BO, into the coop since she would not eat or drink and kept walking to the door, like in a daze. When I went in the coop, I did my chicken call that I usually do to gather them and got the others to come out of the coop and threw scratch down like I usually do and she started pecking a little at it, ate a little wet food and a little scrambled egg and drunk water. She really needed to be in familiar surroundings. She still stands in a daze and her left eye is still shut but she ate and drank!

We went back to check on her and she actually got up on her place on the roost. She was one of the 3 who roosted on the bottom roost and the other two died so she is all alone on the roost, but she's roosting. Not out of the woods yet, but better. If we kept her inside, she would have starved herself.

The 2 injured BR's are best buddies too, I let the one that can move walk around and she went to lay beside her more injured sister.

They'll be moving to the coop tomorrow, but I'll separate them inside for a few days. The more injured BR may not make it until tomorrow, but there's still hope for her since she is trying to move and is eating a drinking.

Hope all of you have a good night and thank you for listening and your concern.

My husband told me I better go to bed, he caught me in time, I was about to feed our dog chicken feed. Oops!
I think I am exhausted.

- Lynn
