you don't hear too many people on here expressing disappointment in getting more females then expected. Usually the other way around. Are you planning to breed some of them too? The BLRW's maybe. In the future, I'll get one of those, but I have more then I need already and I don't want to chase my husband away.We have 10 male Buff orpingtons and 4 females (all were suppose to be males, sighs), 3 male barred rocks and 1 female (also suppose to be a male) 6 male blue laced red wyndottes, 1 female
Barnevelder (also suppose to be male), 2 male Partridge plymouth rocks (suppose to be female) and 10 females, 2 female white leghorns, 2 male black astalorps and 3 females, and 1 red sexlink female.
Well it is always good when you want and can keep a rooster. My 1st Meyer order will be 6 weeks old on Monday. I ordered 2 female BO's & and 1 female SS. I wound up with 1 SS pullet, 1 BO pullet, & now I'm positive, 1 BO roo!! I'm not complaining. Planned to get a BO roo someday anyway, just now I need another female. Lol
Yay for Sunni! Send her over here to talk to Daisy. I guess I will give her until 6 months old before I complain about her again. no promises though. I hope Sunni lays big and healthy looking eggs. It's good to know something that you're doing is working.Sunni is going to start laying eggs soon! She was checking out the nest boxes this morning, and the space between her pelvic bones is a tiny bit bigger than two fingers. Yay!! I was scared at first that she wasnt getting the right nutrients because of the way I have to feed her, but it seems like I'm doing it right!![]()
We're still on hawk patrol here, a male and female hawk flew right over the chickens while they were free ranging. The little chicks stay inside a lot since the big girls chase them in. Not sure if they are being mean or just protecting them from the hawks. It is nice to think that maybe they're concerned about their safety.
I remember these pics! Cute chicks! (Future note to self: get a Speckled Sussex)I think I've posted them on this thread b4, but I'm not positive, so here they are!

We started on this chicken journey with 7 chicks in early June from Meyer! All survived and are thriving, just about 15 weeks now. We have 2 RIR (Mary Todd Lincoln and Eleanor Roosevelt), 3 BR (one was a meal maker - Nancy Regan, Jackie Kennedy, and Martha Washington) and 2 EE (Abigail Adams and Julia Grant). We were pretty confident around 10 weeks that we had all pullets and we purchased a 9 month-old SFH rooster from a local breeder to serve as our patriarch (Jefferson Davis).

. We wanted to buy a rooster that had a mellow personality rather than risk hatching one and not knowing what he'd become. Supposedly JD's about 9 months old and was bred locally. I guess he's got a few conformation issues which make him sub-par as far as the SFH breeders go around here (I think his wing hands too low?) but he's perfect for our backyard needs. He's not 100% in his role as patriarch although he does a great job of alerting the ladies to impending threats when they're doing their evening freeranging. And he makes the most hilarious sounds. I'm very happy with him! Although now I want an SFH hen
