you don't hear too many people on here expressing disappointment in getting more females then expected. Usually the other way around. Are you planning to breed some of them too? The BLRW's maybe. In the future, I'll get one of those, but I have more then I need already and I don't want to chase my husband away.

My 1st Meyer order will be 6 weeks old on Monday. I ordered 2 female BO's & and 1 female SS. I wound up with 1 SS pullet, 1 BO pullet, & now I'm positive, 1 BO roo!! I'm not complaining. Planned to get a BO roo someday anyway, just now I need another female. Lol
Well it is always good when you want and can keep a rooster.

Sunni is going to start laying eggs soon!

She was checking out the nest boxes this morning, and the space between her pelvic bones is a tiny bit bigger than two fingers. Yay!! I was scared at first that she wasnt getting the right nutrients because of the way I have to feed her, but it seems like I'm doing it right!
Yay for Sunni! Send her over here to talk to Daisy. I guess I will give her until 6 months old before I complain about her again. no promises though. I hope Sunni lays big and healthy looking eggs. It's good to know something that you're doing is working.

We're still on hawk patrol here, a male and female hawk flew right over the chickens while they were free ranging. The little chicks stay inside a lot since the big girls chase them in. Not sure if they are being mean or just protecting them from the hawks. It is nice to think that maybe they're concerned about their safety.

I think I've posted them on this thread b4, but I'm not positive, so here they are!

Greetings from Virginia :) We started on this chicken journey with 7 chicks in early June from Meyer! All survived and are thriving, just about 15 weeks now. We have 2 RIR (Mary Todd Lincoln and Eleanor Roosevelt), 3 BR (one was a meal maker - Nancy Regan, Jackie Kennedy, and Martha Washington) and 2 EE (Abigail Adams and Julia Grant). We were pretty confident around 10 weeks that we had all pullets and we purchased a 9 month-old SFH rooster from a local breeder to serve as our patriarch (Jefferson Davis).

Recently, Julia underwent a plumage change which had/has us concerned for a sex change... everything about her truly screams hen to us, so we are remaining hopeful!

Here are some photos from a recent photoshoot ;)

An RIR - can't tell from this close up!

I've really enjoyed reading lots of old and more recent posts... we are all lucky to have such beautiful birds!

With those red blotches I can see why you are worried about Julia. Keep us posted. I know a lady that has an EE that looks very similar to that and I told her I was 90% sure it was a roo. I posted it on BYC and everyone agreed. I hope your Julia stays a Julia. ;)

Great names and beautiful birds! I love your coop picture too, it looks so rustic and cozy. I am envious of all that land too.

Jefferson Davis is such a beautiful rooster too. I vote pullet for Julia, but I am so new at this, so could be wrong.

Welcome to the thread, I look forward to updates on your chickens and new egg pictures. You are approaching that special time now!

Thank you! We've got 4 acres and the remaining 40 is for sale (not our land, we'd love to buy at least 20 of it) so it's like living on a ton of gorgeous, rolling land. We moved from the city about 6 months ago, so life is pretty spectacular. The shed is old but the right coop part is all new construction; we covered both the shed and coop with barnboard harvested from the 100+ year old fallen barn. It's got a blue tin roof too which is fun but unfortunately you can't see it here.

So happy for your pullet vote! I never had any doubt and then with her color change... threw me for a loop. Will be exciting to see what happens to her over the next few weeks. And yes, I cannot wait for eggs! I have to get on hubby to build in the nesting boxes soon.

Here's a full body pic of JD. Of course he didn't step right into the sun so he doesn't look quite as sparkling as he is in real life.

Thanks for all the wonderful stories... can't wait to keep sharing :D

No problem, Fryze. :)

I think she is a buff orp. She has buff feathers coming in

I agree. :) Congrats!

7freedoms, at 15 weeks old, it should be more obvious if Julia was a boy. See the shiny, pointed, hanging orange feathers on JD at the base of his tail? Those usually come in at about 12 weeks on cockerel, sometimes earlier. You can check Julia to see if she has some coming in late by spreading the feathers on her back and looking for shiny, pointed feathers coming in (they will not necessarily be orange like JD's, but they will have a similar shiny, pointy appearance). However, I'm pretty confident that she is a girl by the size of her comb at her age and the fact that the red in her wings isn't a rich, brick red like is typical for a cockerel. :)

7freedoms , I have lots of experience with EEs and your Julia looks like a pullet to me. I agree pipdzipdnreadytogo , the red coming in isn't dark enough and her comb is a petite and way too pale to belong to a rooster. Her shape is very feminine also, a late developing cockeral would be all angular. She is beautiful. And what breed did you say your rooster was? He's just gorgeous.

The comb made me question it too. The other EE I was talking about was much younger when it got the red splotches and they were much darker and shinier. It's comb was also red at 8 weeks old. I think she is beautiful and stays a pullet. We did have an EE roo and it was obvious by 14 weeks. The body type on the roo was the same as our pullets though so I don't give much stock in that.

I am very jealous of your land too. Wish I could find something like that around here!

Yay for the pullet votes! It stinks because we don't have any restrictions as far as having roosters... but we're raising them as pets and I'm still a bit of a control freak and like to get what I expect! Hahahaha

JD is a Swedish Flower Hen... Roo :p . We wanted to buy a rooster that had a mellow personality rather than risk hatching one and not knowing what he'd become. Supposedly JD's about 9 months old and was bred locally. I guess he's got a few conformation issues which make him sub-par as far as the SFH breeders go around here (I think his wing hands too low?) but he's perfect for our backyard needs. He's not 100% in his role as patriarch although he does a great job of alerting the ladies to impending threats when they're doing their evening freeranging. And he makes the most hilarious sounds. I'm very happy with him! Although now I want an SFH hen :p
