I like your setup that you made there, is that for roosting? Looks like something my girls would enjoy.I just happen to find these 2 pics of my Meyer girls who I got mid April of this year:
And today:
They are pretty nice girls though the Welsummers are a little bossy and definitely the busy bodies of the group. The Golden Campine is flighty as can be. The SLW's & the Barnevelder are the friendliest so far.
Oh wow, I hope that you do find someone to take them. It sounds like a few on this thread may be able to help out. It also sounds like you have a good plan or the 2 that you're going to keep. Maybe once that tall fence is built and maybe if you have nice neighbors you can add more in the future. So sorry again that you're going through this, wish there was something I could do to help.I don't have any pictures of my girls...They have been stuck in the coop for the last 3 weeks because of the hawk, and the lighting in my coop is terrible for pictures. I really want to try and get some pictures of all of my chickens before they go to their new homes (wherever that may be). We are most definitely moving, and the city council still hasn't decided whether or not they are going to allow chickens. Which means all of my girls except two are going to new homes. I am keeping my two special needs girls. Sunni, and Henny. Henny is very old and almost completely blind. I think the stress of living in a new place and not having me there would kill her. We are going to make a tiny chicken palace in the basement of the new house. It'll have dust bath boxes, things to climb on, and hopefully some trays of grass in the Spring.![]()
I could get in serious trouble if anyone found out that I will have two chickens in the house, so mums the word. We are going to hopefully put up a 6' privacy fence so they can at least go out and run around in the back yard when I'm out there gardening.
I'm really heartbroken that I can't take all of my girls (and boy) with me, but we are going to find them some good homes. Hopefully where they can all live together and don't have to be split up.
That's really good repurposing. Where did you get your fertile eggs? Depending on how many eggs you tried to hatch, that seems like a good amount of hatched chicks.LynnEBC,
Actually that is a repurposed rose cage DH made a couple of years ago. After a while, it lost it's luster in the landscape so we moved it into the chicken run and the girls all love it as a roost or just dust bathing around it.
We actually have 22 other chickens. We got these 6 in the Spring and then I had 2 hens go broody so I bought some fertile eggs which gave me 5 chicks a little younger than these 6. Two of the hatched chicks are Roos so we decided we will try keeping one of them but will need to rehome the other. I have decided no chicks next Spring.![]()
Ha Ha - I hope my willpower holds out too. DH already added xtra roosting space which has helped. I found a lady on Craig's List selling Cochin hatching eggs so I contacted her to see if she had any other kinds of fertile eggs. Cochins are pretty but since our chickens semi free range in a wooded area they share with some messy ducks I didn't want any feather footed breeds. She happened to have some Barnevelder eggs which was perfect as I had already gotten a Barnie from Meyer. Of the 6 eggs, 2 hatched - the other eggs were broken during the incubation period probably by other chickens. I gave the 2nd broody her own space but 2 eggs still got broken and she kicked one out so she hatched 3.That's really good repurposing. Where did you get your fertile eggs? I have decided no chicks this Spring as well. I hope that I listen to myself! We can't hold anymore in the coop now and should only have 20 chickens total, I have 22, so I'd have to rehome a few first. I like all of my chickens though, so that won't be happening anytime soon.

You both have Barnvelders?! I would love to see more pics, since that's one of my "I wish" breeds!Mine turned 18 weeks old this week, dont have current picks. I do have say my barnevelder is the meanest. She actually bit me with her beak last week. Never had that happen til her. I also recieved 4 black copper marans. I do have to say I am not happy with the quality at all. Only one has feathered shanks. Then I have one that has no copper in her neck at all, all black.
