Oh boy... 4 more chickens in the house!!! My DH would freak for sure
I took my heated waterer back since it didn't work and was debating between just a heated dog dish or the galvanized heater to put under my galvanized waterer and went with the 2nd option. I thought the dog bowl looked easy to use but I think my girls will get it filthy. They get their regular waterers full of sand and they're elevated or hanging so I didn't want to spend almost $60 to be unhappy with it. Maybe I'll look on ebay to find a cheap one.
I have a really cheap solution for a heated waterer during winter!
Get an 8-10ft section of heat tape, the kind that's used to keep manufactured homes underbelly pipes from freezing. The heat tape is wrapped around the metal jacket of the chicken waterer, duct taped on, wrapped with vet wrap as an insulator, and ducted taped from bottom to top as waterproofing. I have thermostat control on mine, so it shuts off at a certain temp. I'll post a picture of it tomorrow when I get a chance. It only costs a penny or two a day to run and it just gets plugged into a regular electrical socket.
