Thanks! I was a little tired of the solid white plain-jane Cornish and the leg problems. I had planned on buying a bunch of heavy weight roosters to grow out this year instead of the broilers, so the special was perfect for what I needed.

My Olive is still not doing so great. I've probably read every emergency thread. I gave her a break from meds for the last few days. The suggestion was made that it could help her balance her system. She's been getting extra electrolytes but still not eating much. I was reading about cayenne pepper and how it can help treat a variety of problems. Of course, I don't know for sure what is wrong so I think I'll try this tomorrow. I hate to think I am prolonging the suffering of an animal.

Sorry about your Splash. I have an Australorp with spraddle leg. I taped her up/ braced her legs to try to correct it but she doesn't want to eat. She has plenty of energy to make the taping hard. She will drink if I dip her beak in water but she just doesn't seem interested in food. I hope she makes it. Hard to believe you can get attached to something so tiny!

Thanks, we have not done it before but need to since we have one chicken that is abusive to the others. We've always planned to rotate the chickens out and get more through the years, but we're kinda wimpy about it. It is so hard the first time, just getting to that point. I have seen it done but have not done it myself. I plan to use a method just like the kosher one too. We had planned to start with any roosters that we ended up with, but with 3 orders from Meyer's we ended up with all hens.

When you say you plan to do it the kosher way are you just referring to using a knife and the killing method? Or are you talking about an actual all out kosher process? I knew they used a sharp knife supposedly for the respect of the animal, but then to read that due to a mark on the lung meaning there could be an abscess, only about 30% of animals slaughtered actually get eaten shows the opposite of respecting an animal's life if you ask me! I think if you kill it and the it is edible you owe that animal to eat it. They also don't eat the hindquarter of the animal because there are too many veins and nerves and fat to pull out first. Again seems wasteful to only eat half of the animal. IMHO that is.

Having read a lot of experiences I think if we ever do it again we'll make a killing cone (I've seen them done out of traffic cones). Those hold it nice and calm so it isn't stressed.


I'm sorry you lost your splash. We lost a ton of chicks from Meyer every time we ordered from them. I think the change in altitude and cold here doesn't do well for them. So far the 8 we hatched ourselves are doing well. Only one pasty butt and only once. We aren't out of danger yet but I think it's a good sign we haven't lost any yet.
