Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

I decided to have some fun and select one photo from each day with our chicks, starting with the first 50! There were only a few days I didn't take any pics so I selected a photo from the day before or after as most had lots. Today is day 51, hard to believe. This weekend we finished the girl's tractor/movable pen for grazing (they will also have a larger run attached to the coop with hardware cloth). We also made some progress on the coop, I was in charge of measuring, cutting and installing the insulation, fun job on and 88 degree day, we just need to put up the roof and my husband needs to figure out the doors and attach the perch and poop board. We gave the girls lots of shade in the tractor, watermelon as well as ice and mint in their water but after reading the Chicken Chicks article last night on keeping chicks safe in the heat I realize we should have misted them and perhaps dunked Amelia who was panting and spreading her wings away from her body while resting. I put some electrolytes in their water this morning and everyone is doing well. Anywho pics:

I have zero experience with a broody, but for some reason I think leaving in the cage has been more successful.

Yup, even though you have not done it before you're right. She just enjoys free ranging so much and takes advantage of it when I let the others out. I may lock up the coop while they free range and just put her in the cage right after. She'd be a terrible mama since she abandons the nest or hours while she free ranges.

Oh yeah, so the guy who was going to take two of my cockerels... He was just starting out and I think I may have accidentally talked him out of it. Duh! I was really so skeptical of someone wanting them. So I asked him if he had chickens or was just getting started. When he said he was just starting and only wanted a few layers, I told him two roos might be too many. I offered to hold one for him until he got some girls, but haven't heard back. Oh well.

Probably was for the best, I bet you'll get others who respond.

Boy it is good to be home! 2500 miles driven this last week!
Despite horrible weather while we were gone all our girls appear to be doing well.

Our lone survivor of our youngest group became very attached to us. I was out getting the chickens setup before we left and she would run over to me and jump on my lap, then up to my shoulder/head. I've never had a chicken that would do that before. Since she doesn't have a flock and gets picked on by the older girls we decided to take her with us. She loved the car ride!

And here she is asleep on my daughter's shoulder in the car. She is wearing a harness my daughter made for her (she only wore it for a few minutes). Most of the time she sat on the back of our chairs, perfectly content.

I have started the refresh dance already...trying to get a cream legbar for my hatchday order!!!! SOOOO anxious!!!

I know. I feel so bad for them stuck in the cage. But laying hens in an egg mill would probably have 4 shoved in a cage the size you're using and that's for their whole short life. So 3 days or so won't be so bad. Of course I'm saying this to make myself feel better. I'm off to put Moe in her cage! She was broody 2x last year but I can tell by her demeanor she's much more serious this time. I went out and put her on the roost last night after dark but by the time I got to the house and looked on the camera she had jumped down and back into the box. She never did that last year. So I gotta do the cage today too.

Thx. Now I'm reading a ton about the depluming mite but there's not much out there. Apparently you can't see them and it makes them very itchy and they pull their feathers out from overpreening. I'm thinking it's that. Trying to read all I can but I think that's what it may be.

LOL, but if he took them it could have been a very bad experience for him and the boys so it's a good thing.

So true. I will probably still let her out when they free range, but I'll move her back to the cage as soon as they are done outside. She takes a lot of dust baths and I really don't want her having trouble if she can't do that. So maybe if I catch her before she goes in the nest box. I am adding ice to her water now too to hopefully cool her off faster. She has not plucked feathers out either, I don't think she knows what she is doing.

Great pictures! They are so cute. It sounds like you have made a lot of progress on your coop too. Please share pictures if you get a chance.

I like Mr. Tea. That's cute. We have an apricot too except our's is a BO. We just picked her up yesterday. We usually only name the ones we plan on eating food names. We have a rooster right now who I've been calling Dinner.

I might quite be insane....

But last night I was at a cook-out with a bunch of friends & got to talking to one of my friends who has a bunch of chickens... she's such an enabler, as we all are!

One of my local silkie breeder contacts has recently been in contact with me about chicks that he has...I might be going out there tomorrow afternoon to take a look at them! They have someone coming out tonight to look, but they aren't sure how many these people are going to take!

He's going to text me afterwards and let me know if there are any left...but they do hatch on a regular cycle. Since the silkies are quite fragile, they will be a little hardier when the big troop arrives!

I love Persimmon, she's gorgeous and it looks like her name fits her perfectly. As for your roo, I like Licorice. It's too bad there aren't many black fruit, mostly berries with the name black and berry in it. Hmm, Mulberry, Black Currant, Passion, Professor Plum... And if only Anise didn't sound so much like Anus... yeah I'd go with Licorice

Thanks! Persimmon was my mystery meal maker. Her personality is really nice. She in the middle of the pecking order, quiet, and tolerant of petting and holding.

My hubby liked Plum as a name for him. I think it's too girly. I like prof plum, except I can see myself shortening it to P. P. Lol, poor little guy.
