Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Thanks you guys!
I really do hope the CW at least is a female. I have been on the fence about it. Just gonna take pics and document, then resubmit the pics the 18th week. I truly do believe the other 3 are roos. I will probably keep the light brahma, so far he is so friendly and always wants to be held. Wish I could keep the others but I can't. Don't want to put that kind of stress on my girls or my neighbors.
I will let you all know what the final out come is. Thank you for your support and listening to me rant and whine.

No problem, that's what we're here for.

We had a close encounter of the hawk kind. The chickens were having a fit and most of them were in the outside temporary area that I made for them. I looked outside and there was a hawk on top of the run. It swooped down and tried to land where the chickens were, of course they were all screaming like they were about to die. I had bird netting over the spot where he flew and he got caught up in it and flew off and landed on the ground, then Maxie, our dog ran out and chased it away. Close call. The netting was not completely over the whole area, so I was lucky it landed where it did. Now the whole area is covered in netting, I don't want anymore trouble.
Of course the hawk was the same size of our smallest chicken so I am not sure it could have done too much damage.

We had the same idea for having some for meat, but once you get to know the chickens, it's so hard. Those dorkings sure are beautiful though. I see why he likes them so much.

My chickens dig down for the moist soil too it helps them cool off. Actually our dog does the same.

So happy that you found homes for them. All these roosters that everyone is getting really makes me fear getting chicks next spring. I have never had to rehome any. Hopefully your GLP is a girl!

My CW was like that and she perked up in less then 8 hrs after some electrolyte water drops. She eventually got up like a little drunken chick and was soon walking and eating and drinking fine. She's a great layer now and a sweet hen. Although she does not liked to be touched.

Oh the mistakes I have made too. I always have a fear of not giving them food and water or leaving a door open, etc, It is all so stressful at times. Yesterday they escaped a little free range area that I had near the coop and were all over the yard. That would not usually be a big problem except for the act that our dog was lose in the yard too. I happened to see chickens in the yard and ran out. My dog, Maxie met me at the door and was not bothered at all that the chickens were out with her, of course she was napping and had not noticed. Lucky, lucky me. I have of course fixed the area now where they got out.

Your CW still looks like a hen to me too with her stance, shape and comb. The only thing that resembles a roo to me is the neck feathers, but some look pointed and some look rounded in the picture, She also still looks like my CW. Very confusing. I see a few curly feathers on her tail too? I'm sorry for your luck, I hope that at least she is a hen.

Oh yeah, I have a few ideas now. I may buy one from Amazon, but then I might just make one, shouldn't be too hard. There's no hurry.

Thank you, I am excited to be a grandma soon! That's so neat that your pug is pregnant. That is so cool for kids to experience that, another good homeschooling teaching moment for you. Hmmm, an ultrasound for dogs, there probably is someone out there that does that.
big_smile.png
Candling would be so much cheaper though! Guess you'll just have to be surprised on the 9th. Do you breed and sell them? Was this a planned pregnancy? That would be such a rude question, if it wasn't a dog.
wink.png

Lol. Those would be really rude questions if we weren't talking about a dog. This is her first litter. It was planned. We own the father also. We'll see how this litter goes to determine if we want to do it again.
They usually do xrays for dogs but I don't want to put her through that. We'll just wait and see. I was reading that next week we may be able to see them moving. :)

No problem, that's what we're here for.

Even a small hawk will do damage. Hawks don't carry large prey away like you think of. They will actually land on a chickens back, hold them down, and start eating them alive! It's brutal. All of the chickens that we've had attacked so far have lived and I credit that to our dogs chasing off the hawks in time.

I look forward to seeing those puppies in a few weeks!
Oh wow!? That is brutal. I'm glad I covered their area fully now. That's so gruesome!

I brought in my GLP tonight, Belle, to see how she was healing. I'm 99% convinced that the pecking & pulling out of feathers was from the roosters as she is looking almost healed tonight!

Though you can't see very well because of her wild poof - (and she has food stuck on her poof again too), the entire front of where her comb would be was a giant pecked area. Now there is no sore and just mildly pink.

The side is the area where the boys plucked out all the feathers & they don't appear to be growing back. It gives her a lop sided punk do. Also, around her eye was a bunch of small peck/abrasions. Those are cleared up now & no longer red. Her poof looks really spikey right now because there is so much food matted in there & she also has a ton of pin feathers coming in at once. I'm really hoping she isn't a HE!

I haven't seen anymore issues with the girls picking on her, not that I saw any to begin with. She was the 1st at the feeder this morning & no one pushed her out of the way as they were interested in the tomatoes that were out there. She's at the bottom of the pecking order, but at least she doesn't appear to be pecked on anymore!

I'm pretty sure our silkie we thought was a girl is actually a roo. He started getting streamers from the crest, and his comb grew over night. He is 6 months old. His hatchmate I've known was a male from a very young age but this one was slow to mature and doesn't act like a roo much since he's all the way down on the pecking order of roos. I am fairly convinced after today. My friend moved back from KS today and we moved her chickens into our area (separated but they can see each other) for her temporarily. He started doing the roo fighting through the fence with their silkie roo.

That means we'll be getting rid of our other silkie roo and keeping him because I like his coloring better.

I discovered our EE, Amber, has bumble foot. Not too bad yet, she wasn't limping or anything. My daughter's friend was holding her and I happen to look over and saw the scab on her foot. It isn't red or very swollen. Hopefully it will cure with a soak and wrap just like it did for our D'Uccle.
I gave them some roosts in the run so they could get off the wet ground (we've had a really wet summer) but they don't really use them. I'm going to bring her in tomorrow for a good soak and also try to check all of the chickens.

Thanks you guys!

Oh my goodness! I hate hawks sooo much (although some of them are beautiful)We have also had a close encounter like you! But just in my case our goats chased the hawk off (they had kids so they must have thought it was going for that!) I was sooo thankful to the goats 'cause I didn't want to loose a chicken!

I hope she heals 100% soon! She is really cute, I love polish chickens!

I am having a terrible time quoting and replying now with the iOS update! Aargh!!! Anyway, @The Howards we are all for each other! This community here has helped me through my chicken worries too.
@rnchick74 she's a cutie! I hope she heals fast and they all get along.

The other three are definitely boys. I've heard good things about Brahma boys and my own experience with Cochin boys, so either way you'd probably do well. It's my understanding, though, that good Delaware boys come from lines breeding specifically for calmness, which I doubt would include hatchery lines, so he could go either way. Hopefully, though, your Brahma boy stays nice and gentle for you. :) Hoping your CW is just a quick-to-mature pullet! :fl

I'll still buy from Meyer myself, but so far I have always gotten hens.

Thanks!

They are all so pretty. I never knew how pretty those dorkings are, such a neat combination of colors. What color egg do they lay?
Louise does have cool orange eyes. I look forward to seeing the first egg that your Welsummer lays, I hope that it is really dark. Violet once a good mistake that happened to you, she is beautiful, I don't think I have looked into that breed before.

I have as well. The only two cockerels I've gotten from Meyer were the two straight run bantams I bought from them. So a good rate of pullets from the pullets I've bought, but not such a good rate for straight run. Although, that's just my luck. I've only ever gotten one pullet from chicks bought as straight run.

I love, love, love silver partridge, which is why I wanted a Dorking from them so badly! They should lay white to cream eggs. I'll be sure to post pics when any of these babies lay--I want nice, dark eggs from Mabel and the Marans, too!

And yeah, I love Violet, such a sweetie! I had wanted two Legbars for blue eggs, but now I want more Bielefelders for their personalities! :D They lay brown eggs (which I have in abundance), but if Vi is any indication, they are such calm, sweet birds!

hey guys....

One of my 6 week old Meyer Olive Egger is developing a small crest! adorable and so cute! Must be coming from the CLB they use. Anyone have older Meyer Olive Egger with a crest? I'd love to see a picture.

Thanks,

How scary!! I'm on the lookout for them this time of year. Seems like there's a lot more around than in the summertime.

Oh that sounds awful! Thank goodness for your dogs.

Do you have a pic of your Silkie roo? I'm still on the fence about mine. He/she is 5 months old today. I heard a crow several weeks ago but not since then so now I'm wondering if I dreamed it? LOL
I would think there would have been more crows since then if he is indeed a he.

Mine has a little mini crest too.... so cute. She's 6 weeks today too... maybe they are sisters??

You can barely see it sticking up in these pics... I'll try to get better photos. These were over a week ago.
My girl (Shady) always looks like she needs a little gel to get it to go down!
