Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Time for a six week update!! Wow, this six weeks has flown by! I'm pretty convinced they are all girls except maybe for the brahma. Everyone has turned a little bit light pink in the comb over the last week, but no one more than another.

Eggplant - Black Ameraucana
I am pretty sure there is only one of row peas there!! Woohoo!

Limabean-Splash Ameracauna (yet to be confirmed by Meyer)
Not interested in a photo op

Olive-light brahma
My suspected roo. He's so much taller than everyone else too

Sarsaparilla-Cuckoo Marans and Strawberry-Speckled Sussex
They love snuggling together

Pumpkin-Welsummer
Finally a decent picture of her. I just love all the colors on her.

This group better give me my blue egg!! My RIR is still broody. It's been about six weeks. I'm so tempted to get some eggs for her. At least I know she will stick with her eggs and not abandon them.

Well I saw our once-thought-was-a-girl silkie crow this morning. Proof positive I was correct that she is indeed a he. So, I'm going to take the other one to the local swap this weekend (I think there is one).

I could've killed Dinner myself this morning. I watched him chase our D'Uccle down and then jump on her and aggressively peck her head. He was standing on her wing! He didn't appear to be trying to mount her, just being mean. Our little cochin has no tail feathers or head feathers anymore because of him. He needs to be taken care of asap. We bought new shears on Monday because our old ones are too dull to do the job. Now to find a traffic cone he fits in.

Poor things! I hope someone wants him!

Got to do what you go to do!

We are going to process our spare LF roosters, but I can't bring myself to do a silkie. We hatched 4 silkies and they are all boys! I don't think we'll be able to get rid of them. Trying to figure out what to do with them.

My friend brought 3 lavender opringtons with her. I love them. She still owes me money for some birds so I think I'll try to make a deal with her for one of them. I'll try to get a pic of them. They are much lighter than our blue cochin.

For some reason it didn't quote the other thread I was going to reply to. My friend's chickens will be here an indeterminate amount of time. It depends on a few factors: how quickly their house in KS sells, and how quickly they find a place to live here that allows chickens. It's not too much of a deal since we have the room. Just another food and water bowl to fill. I'm just hoping they will go inside on their own tonight. That's the biggest deal for me. That's a lot of chickens to manually put away.
That's nice that you might get a lavender orp out of the deal. It is so frustrating training a bunch of chickens to go into a coop. When I did it a couple years ago, I had 16 of them that I was trying to get in.

Did anyone see the episode of Knife Fight where the main ingredient they had to use was Silkie Chicken? I'd never seen one used for food before.
I missed that, but friends of ours bought a silkie that was already for cooking and it was the weirdest looking thing. I have heard it tastes really good though, but I have not tried it myself. It's supposed to be a delicacy isn't it?

Oh know, does that give you 5 silkie roos now?

It is a whole lot easier culling the mean ones. So far that's all we have done, just the one mean hen. Your poor D'Uccle.

Poor banties! Hope Dinner is tasty!

So I have 2 Silkie roosters that I am going crazy with. As far as roosters go the do the job just fine and have never dropped a wing to any person and they seem good when they are by them selfs, but get them together and they become evil little minions! They work together as a team. One does not seem to be higher then the other in the pecking order but they tag team all the other roosters! And the hens... But that's another story...
They have risen to the top except for my BR rooster, but even he is so fet up with them I think he is contemplating murdering them in there sleep!!! Once in a while he gets one by himself and politely reminds them how small they really are but when they get together and start messing with him, it's like watching something from WWE where the little guys come out and tag team the big guy and the big guy can't do anything cuz the little ones are all over the place and if you focus on one the others gonna get you....
It's pitiful to see the confused frustrated look on the BR face! Nobody is getting hurt yet but some how this constant harassment has got to stop. I need to get rid of one and I think it will be fine but it seems like no one wants a silkie roo..... I normally eat my extra roosters but I always have a hard time butchering the bantams. What to do what to do.
That sounds pretty funny... little silkies torturing your big bad roosters! I think you need a video... may go viral :)

I love all your pics. Lola looks a lot like my EE, Ellie and she is the one who lays a blueish green egg. Closest to blue I've gotten so far.

I like the Ameraucana idea for next year for me too.

X2.... didn't get a true blue egg this time so there's always next!! Gotta have something to look forward to. I still have never had a white egg! One of my Brabanters squatted for me for the first time today so hopefully my first white egg in a week or 2. Wanna take bets they lay cream colored eggs and not white??

Awww... bummer about your Silkie.
I'm sure it's a bit easier to cull a rooster when they're being mean to your girls. I think I would just kick him to the curb pretty quick too. Just curious... I've never seen a D'Uccle in person.... are they all bantams or LF too? do you have pics? did you get yours from a breeder?

We hatched 4 silkies and they all turned out to be roos. :( Gotta try and get a hen soon so she'll be ready for breeding this spring.

If the silkie roo doesn't go to a home within a month or two maybe we'll try eating him. I just can't get over the black skin and stuff.

Poor banties! Hope Dinner is tasty!

He'd better be!

They are bantams. Smaller than a silkie. Our's is a Mille Fleur (MF) but they come in other colors also. My friend has a lavender one and a MF.

Here is a recent pic (1 1/2yo), she was broody and all fluffed up. I don't have a recent full body shot because she just got over molting.

Here she is with our other chickens last winter (makes me miss our BR)

And here she is on her own. As you can see she got a lot more white as she got older.

She's really cute! That's a pretty pic of them in the snow. I love her color and didn't know they come in others as well. hers is my fav. color though.
