Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Sadly, Nutmeg one of our Welsummer's got frost bite on her comb. She sat in the small coop nest box too long on some eggs. We cleaned it up and applied Blu Kot but it wouldn't stop bleeding and her breed sister tried picking on her, so she is isolated in a crate in the bathroom. Once the bleeding stops, we will re-apply Blu Kot and put her back with the group. It is sunny and 30 here, certainly not as cold as it has been, makes me wonder how long she was sitting in the nest box, my guess is about an hour. I say that because I did egg rounds before I walked our dogs and she was in there but no egg. After I walked the dog, maybe an hour, I checked and she was still in there.

So any advice for me? I am trying not to beat myself up over this as these things happen with livestock. I did decide to block off the small coop as it isn't as warm as main coop.I did check everyone else and no other issues like this.
Aww poor dear! We have a girl who sits in the nest box for sometimes two or three hours at a time. Her comb is pretty small however. How is the ventilation in your coop? You want all the moist air to rise up and out but not be drafty below.

Coop should be good, got the top window which is the size of a dinner plate, about 1/2 open. I will see if I can get a shot before dark. Anyway, no air blowing directly on roosts or girls and we have gaps around the coop. Meaning it is not buttoned up so tight that their is no air flow. Humidity has not gotten above 21% in the last 24 hours. I went ahead and blocked the small coop so nobody is in those nest boxes laying during this cold.

Here are some shots of Nutmeg, poor girl.

Sorry they aren't the best shots, was trying to take quickly to not let in a bunch of cold air. Temp in coop is 10 and humidity was 16% .

Sounds like your humidity is good. You have a bowl of water correct? Is it possible her comb got wet? If her comb is at the bleeding stage she didn't get the frost bite in that hour on the nest.

The dinner plate sized window ... which side of the coop is it on? (N,S,E,W) What direction do your prevailing winds come from this time of year? Could it be that more air is blowing in than ventilating out? Just curious.

thanks, I don't think it got wet in the water bowl as the bowl isn't huge....we believe that it probably happened overnight. Wondering if she slept in the nest box of the big coop. We have a gap we need to cover..

the window is north and our prevailing winds this time of year are north and east. All the windows on the east side of coop are covered. Don't think too much is blowing in but as stated above the nest boxes have a space between the lid and lip of nest box, not huge. The nest boxes are on the east side of the coop. Will be fixing that draft in case we do have girls trying to sleep in there.

Thanks guys

Quote:I saw them at Cackle, My Pet Chicken, and one other can't remember where. I have to tell you she is laying every day... takes a day off every 5h or 6th. Very curious a real sweetie. Her egg is not totally white but very close. I will definitely be able to tell her from the others I want more for sure!

Sorry.... I've been MIA.... reading but not posting.

Had a close call with my Corgi yesterday... gave him a pigs ear to eat I got from the pet store. As soon as he was finished he got up to walk and it was like he was drunk. He was stumbling, dragging his back legs and then falling down. He would walk a few steps then fall. Then he just collapsed. We thought he was a goner. He couldn't even hold his head up. It was like he was poisoned.
It happened so fast. We put him in his bed and he just laid there with his tongue out. That was about 5:00 Sunday night. By 5:00 tonight he was perfectly normal?!?!
I have no idea what it was but we thought for sure he wasn't going to make it.
Has anyone heard of anything like this happening? He wasn't choking, no blockage and he was completely normal all day until he ate the pigs ear. I'm going to go back where I bought it and tell them about it but you know they won't say/do anything. I just want them to know in case there's something wrong with them.

My little cutie pie...

By the way... no pointy feathers on my OE so I'm guessing girl!
