Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

My Limabean hatched out a forth chick. I was shocked because she really hasn't been sitting. She's been up and about with the three chicks. Well, tonight the poor little thing was kicked out of the nest. Of course I brought it inside knowing he would probably not survive. Minutes later he gave up. I feel bad I couldn't save him, but it looks like he had some issues. He would have been terribly cute too. Must have been ameraucana x brahma because of the feathered feet. Oh well. I guess the little and the bigger heart breaks are what we've signed up for.

Hey everyone! Sorry I haven't been around for a long time. Sad news...our owners showed up last month and made me get rid of my girls

luckily my father in law took them. But he lives over an hour away so I do t get to see them so much. I have been devastated

What horrid owners! I just don't understand why people can't live and let live...

Sorry I missed this. Thanks. No she doesn't have a name yet. She's my husband's chick and he took a long time last year to tell us Victoria's name even though he had decided on it some time ago. This time I don't think he knows yet.

It's Meyer Chick Birthday Monday again!

And this week, I actually have my photos ready before midnight.

I will keep it to a minimum this time, since they are going through their awkward stage, and not very photogenic. But what's not to love about pin feathers and patches of missing down?

Yay happy chicks! I love when red chicks get their feathers in. Blossom is blossoming! She's looking nice and dark for you too

Pics of our 5 week old girls taken Sunday. I was outside for 4 hours with then chicks and hens. Watching them really does help heal the soul.


The White Rock and Light Brahma chicks are BFF's they are always together usually napping at the opposite time of Cora. They cry out to each other when I take one out.


Cornelia is a bit of a loner, but that's okay so was Baby Buff and she rose to greatness and is the queen of snuggles.

Baby and Amelia are showing the most interest in the chicks, aka they are most upset by their presence. Baby purposely tidbitted them, she pecked at a piece of grass right by the wire, held it up and when the White Rock chick stretched her head to check it out, Baby pecked her head and got a tiny little feather. Sigh. Still I knew we had a long way to go with integration.

I love the way your light Brahma is half feather, half down. And Cornelia is still chipmunky cute.

So you think the tidbitting was a trick, and not just instinctive maternal behavior? Don't worry, you have a LOT of time before the new chicks are big enough to meet the hens without the barrier between them. The hens will probably be a lot more comfortable with the chicks by that time.

We had really warm sunny weather this weekend, so I dragged my old puppy ex-pen out of my attic and made a little makeshift play pen for my chicks to spend the afternoon outside. Some of my older hens came around and looked at them through the wire. But only while I was there, and when I went in the house, they all drifted off to their regular foraging activities. I think they were more interested in the structure anyway, than in the chicks.





That's Wendolene thinking about going on the plywood I put up there. She jumps on top of everything! Fortunately, she didn't this time.

Thanks. I do think it was a trick, she tried to peck at them just before it and afterward made her little warning sounds. I could be wrong, but she's a very jealous girl and now she's head hen (whether she's realized it yet or not). Amelia seemed more worried, she's at the bottom.

Aww is that a young turkey in there with them?

I got a first egg from one of the Lav Ams yesterday, but it WASN'T BLUE!! I've been very excited that they were getting close to laying, but seeing the tiny pale cream egg was exciting and disappointing at the same time. (The breeder did call to tell me he was getting some incorrect egg color, and that if it happened to one of my chicks he would replace it. But idk, I'm kind of attached to them.)

Yes, there are two Narragansett turkey poults in with my Meyer chicks. The size difference doesn't seem to matter. What's really cute is when the larger turkey and Blossom sleep side by side on a perch.
