So you think the tidbitting was a trick, and not just instinctive maternal behavior? Don't worry, you have a LOT of time before the new chicks are big enough to meet the hens without the barrier between them. The hens will probably be a lot more comfortable with the chicks by that time.
We had really warm sunny weather this weekend, so I dragged my old puppy ex-pen out of my attic and made a little makeshift play pen for my chicks to spend the afternoon outside. Some of my older hens came around and looked at them through the wire. But only while I was there, and when I went in the house, they all drifted off to their regular foraging activities. I think they were more interested in the structure anyway, than in the chicks.
That's Wendolene thinking about going on the plywood I put up there. She jumps on top of
everything! Fortunately, she didn't this time.
