Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Love those little fluffy butts! I may be going blind, but it seems like there are more than just 14 chicks in the brooder?

I took my glws and my lil polish from the other bin and put them in this one to show the new comers around. Which I ordered 6 glw but theres 7 mhm. All from meyers.

I just figured you were suffering from chicken math denial: "Just 14, that's all I got. Don't know how it jumped up to 20. You're just seeing things, honey!" ;)

Chicken maths got me bad this year. I already know what I want next year lol. I ordered 40 chicks 3 passed since from meyers last week and had to get roos as mine was killed by a dog so had to fill that order so i have 51 plus the 25 i have in the shed. Lol most are for eating though. Next year i might get the cackle suprise box. I think thats what its called. Lol

See?  You are what they call an Enabler!  With a CAPITAL E!   Wicked, wicked!

:lau

I did add the Splash Marans pullet to my MPC order for 2016 (along with a double-lace barnvelder, a silver lakenvelder, and a couple of Polish too in case the one I picked up from the feed store last week turns out to be a roo).  It's so hard to just say NO!

But it will be very hard to walk past the chicks at the feed store.  I have to go into the FAR corner of the store, past lots of things I don't need, just to see the chicks... like they are magnets pulling me against my will. I always feel so sorry for them.  They are in teeny, tiny, cramped cages and are stressed and picking out each others feathers.  It makes me feel bad to leave them behind.

I'm not denying it. :D

Boy, I know it on the chick bins! They're right next to the chicken feed at the store I get my feed from, literally one very out-of-the-way path to get there without walking past them, and even still you can hear them from the feed. Ugh! But I have a very strong resolve, especially by being spoiled by hatchery direct orders--why settle for the straight-run breeds the feed store gets in when you can order what you want AND order them as pullets? Still, like you, I get a strong urge to rescue the ones having difficulty... :( If only I had the time, room, and money to save them all.

This is why I need to win the lottery and buy some acreage somewhere without restrictions. Too many critters need us.

There's a couple lots for sale right next to me. If I had the money, I'd have at least 10 more chickens and a few goats. Who knows where that would go in a few more months!!

04/22/15 - candled eggs last night, don't have a true candler. Used my old IPhone light. Not the best pictures but at least you can see some, here are the results:

25/42 - total in incubator look to be fertile.

From our flock - 22/28 -
BO x EE - 11/15 fertile - it was super hard to see into the blue/green eggs.
BO x EE - 4/15 unknown status based on inability to see anything definitively either way.

From our flock -
BO x Brown Egg Layers (BR, Dark Cornish, Delaware, EE, RIR and Welsummer's) - 11/13 fertile.
BO x BRowns - 1/13 - unknown.
BO x Browns - 1/13 - clear.

From Percheron chicks eggs -

BW Roo x Cream Brabanter - 2/2 - non fertile.
BW roo x Amerecauna's - 3/12 - fertile.
BW roo x Amerecauna - 1/12 - unknown .

Will candle again before lock down and remove any non-viables. Ok no laughing at my makeshift candler. The one I made thinking would work is not bright enough for our dark brown eggs and a good amount of our blue/green eggs. Sorry they aren't better pictures....but it is still eggciting!

Unknown from our flock - a lot of our blue eggs looked like this, some I could see veining on easier than others.

Not sure on this egg but maybe an early death? It doesn't look right to me, need to do more research. You can check out more not so great pictures in my incubation folder in my photos under my profile. Didn't want to clog thread with a bunch of not so great shots.

PS - I have a 12 second video of embryo movement during the candling last night, so cool!
