Called the post office and they said that if they come tomorrow, they will be here between 6:30 and 7:30am. Looks like I'll be sleeping with the phone tonight!

Mine shipped too!!!!! I thought the hatch date was the 7th, but it was for the 6th

I'm doing back flips right now!!!!! Hubby is setting up the brooder now. Has anyone used sand instead of shavings? (a little off topic, I know)

I use sand in my brooder. The 1st couple of days I covered it with paper towels until they learned to eat their chick starter and just changed out the poopy paper towels as needed. By the 3rd day I removed the paper towels, it is easy to clean by just sifting. I also use it in my coop for my bigger chicks.

Just wondering what you use to sift? I use a kitty litter scoop but the tiny little poo's fall through. But a smaller size 'strainer' or 'sifter' might have holes to tiny and it would sift out a lot of the little pebbles that are in my sand.
Just wondering if there's something better out there.

I'm a sand fan, too, but I don't use it in the brooder because of the DUST! Those babies produce enough of that on their own! I'm using pine shavings--partly because I got a big bale of it last year and didn't even use half of it with those chicks!


Eek, can't wait for more baby pictures! e I'm down to a week 'til my babies! I'm flipping out here! Gotta get my room cleaned out, add bedding to my brooder, wash the chick feeder and waterer, and set up a fence outside for their future playpen! It seemed like I had nothing to do for weeks, and now that they're getting close, I'm remembering everything!

I'm sitting here waiting by the phone for the call from the post office. The lady at the post office said they would call between 6:30 and 7:00am. It's 6:37am! Lol

I only got about 5 hours of sleep last night because I was so nervous and excited. I went to bed at 10:30pm, woke up a bunch of times, and I was up out of bed by 4:00am.

Just checked the tracking number and they just updated it at 7:16am and at the point they were about 45-55 minutes away from me! So I should get the call from the post office any minute!

In the coop: I use a kitty litter scoop for quick cleanup and when I have more time I use a old rice strainer or I use a old window screen. My plan is to make a big sifter out of one of our old window screens. I am going to build a rectangular wooden frame from thin wood and attached the screen to it, it will have legs so the sand will just fall right through and the poop will remain on top. If it works like I plan, it should make it easy to just shovel the top of the sand with the poop in the sifter then move it a couple times in the coop and it is done with less bending too.

There are strainers with different sized holes too, so far what I have used has let all the sand pass through, my sand could be different then yours though. It is construction grade.

In the brooder, I use a small sifter to just sift it through and toss the poop in the compost.

I don't think there is anymore dust from the sand then from shavings. I believe the dust is more from all those baby feathers. It would be interesting to hear what people think who have tried it both ways?

I am ready to see those baby pics too. So much fun to see everyone's variety of chicks! You'll be showing off yours soon too!

Just brought my chicks home and they are in the brooder! All 10 are there and all the right breeds. One seems like it's dying though. It keeps wanting to roll it's head back and when it stands up it falls over.

We gave her a few sips of sugar water, and right now she's resting in a warm towel by my mom.

Does anyone know what to do with a chick that won't stand up and rolls it's head back? It's resting right now, but we aren't sure if its going to make it
