Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

I don't think there is anymore dust from the sand then from shavings. I believe the dust is more from all those baby feathers. It would be interesting to hear what people think who have tried it both ways? I am ready to see those baby pics too. So much fun to see everyone's variety of chicks! You'll be showing off yours soon too!

Maybe it's the sand I get (I think there are kinds with less dust, but it's more expensive), but the sand I have in the big-girl coop sure is dusty! It wouldn't bother me as much if the brooder was somewhere else, but the chicks bunk in my room until they're old enough to live outside. And you know it! Prepare for a weekly (or more) picture update from day one on! :D

Just brought my chicks home and they are in the brooder! All 10 are there and all the right breeds. One seems like it's dying though. It keeps wanting to roll it's head back and when it stands up it falls over.

We gave her a few sips of sugar water, and right now she's resting in a warm towel by my mom.

Does anyone know what to do with a chick that won't stand up and rolls it's head back? It's resting right now, but we aren't sure if its going to make it :(

Oh, the poor baby! I don't know for sure, so maybe look it up yourself and see if the symptoms match, but it sounds kinda like wry neck, which is a vitamin deficiency, I think (sorry, I am not being much help here, am I?). You could try to get some vitamin/electrolyte water (or Sav-A-Chick) in her and see if that helps?

We have been giving her a few drops of sugar water here and there. I asked on the forums and somebody said that what we are doing is pretty much all we can do. I'm still waiting for more answers though.

I'll look up wry neck and see if it matches.

She definitely has Wry Neck! We looked it up an that's exactly what she has. My mom is going to go to TSC soon to get the stuff to save her. I really hope she pulls through this!

The other chicks are doing great. They are all happy and active. They've all been eating and drinking like crazy. I'll post some pics later!

Awww, so sorry you have a sick one.
If she doesn't find what you need at TSC I think I read to use Poly-vi-Sol NO iron which is a baby vitamin. It comes with an eye dropper and you just give them a few drops maybe 2X a day. I bought mine at Target and I'm sure they have it at Walmart, any pharmacy and maybe even large grocery stores.
I also bought Liquid Nutri-drench from eBay and that seemed to help too. And is great to have in a First Aid kit for them.

When my little Pipsqueak was weak and seemed about to die that's what I did and she's fine now. Except that she's still incredibly feather challenged. But I've never seen a grown chicken with fluff so I assume she will get all her feathers eventually.

Keep us posted!

My mom found everything except the Poly Vi Sol. She got something else from TSC that might work better than that. It's called Poultry nutri-drench. It says "Rapid, rich nutrition supplement for all classes of poultry. Nutri-drench is a premium, nutrient rich supplement formulated to rapidly deliver energy and essential nutrients."

She is starting to stand up on her own and she has been peeping just like all of the other chicks. We have her in the bathroom right now away from the other chicks. She is doing MUCH better than she was when we first took her out of the box. If they had been in that box another night she would have died.

I decided to name her Hope :) because there is still hope that she will survive.

The rest of the chicks are doing great. They've eaten tons of food and drank a bunch of water since they've been home. Right now they are chasing each other all over their brooder. They are gonna be really tuckered out tonight! The two Campines are by far the most energetic chicks. They haven't stopped running around since we put them in there! I took some pictures and I will upload them for everyone tomorrow!
