Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

So here are some pics of my 6 week olds from Meyer. I think I accidentally got 2 roos in with my pullets, but let me know what you think.

I have 11 Black Australorps. Only 1 died, but i don't have pics of them.

How old are they? Do you already have others too?

Is it strange that I'm only getting 1 egg a day if I have 5 (I think) that are laying or is this normal when they first begin to lay?
I got one large brown egg (I think it may be from Junior my CM but not positive) yesterday and 1 green today. I just want to make sure I'm not doing anything
wrong and this can happen when they first start to lay.

So glad she made it through the night and she's eating and drinking. Sounds like all good signs. You're so lucky to have your friend there to help!!!

Mine took awhile too and I had a few no egg or one egg days. I know some will lay more then others too. My RIR rarely skips a day but the EE skips a day or two here and there.

My husband found me a huge box to keep them in while in our basement, I almost have everything set up now. So excited and nervous. It is so scary opening that shipping box the first time.

I have a feeling our BA laid 1 egg a week or so ago because it was different than our other eggs, but then we didn't get any more or 2 a day until today!
My husband just sent me this. His phone has horrible coloring. The one looks almost white but it's the same creamy color we've been getting. The spotted one is what we had that one time before. Who knows!!!

They are so pretty! I hope my Golden Buff Polish makes it here okay and survives!

Yes, I can keep them fortunately. On the bright side, I guess I can hatch out some pure Buff Orps and RIR next year

I wanted to get a second opinion before I called Meyer for my refund.

That would be fun to hatch a few. Not sure that's in my future though. Maybe I could get some eggs if I have a broody! Always something to think about

It also had this on it. We've had one other like this too. It doesn't break the membrane inside so it's not like they are eating it. He said both chickens were in the nest box together. LOL! Guess their timing was off. Of course one can't use the nest box right next to that one!



Our friend's daughter called me this morning and said our EE - Amber, is still eating and drinking and started talking! Fingers crossed for her!

And does that happen to the egg because it hits the bottom of the nest box and it's not cushioned enough? That's my only thought.

Our first girls did the same thing. Their bodies are still getting used to laying and will do it off and on till they get adjusted.

Guess I shouldn't have had eggs for dinner!!
OK, I'm gonna start saving them. May take me a bit though. hehe
Although, one of my brown eggs was a double yolk again so I guess that explains why I'm not getting eggs every day. Just a thought.
I'm sure they'll work it out over the next few weeks.

That's an idea. I'll have to check that they haven't pushed too much of the straw/shavings out of the box.

I've heard too that sometimes they can crack internally too, but just like hairline cracks. We had an odd cracked looking one and I fed it to the dog, since it looked so funny. It looked fine inside though.

That's funny. Why? Well, my Meyer's chicks are only about 10 days old now and I'm already fairly sure that one of my "pullets" is a roo! The one suspect? My Buff Orpington! He/She is feathering slower than the others are and his/her little comb is already showing more growth than any of the others, except maybe the Light Brown Leghorn, who he/she matches in comb growth. I'm not worried about the Leghorn as much, though, because I had Leghorns growing up and it can be hard telling pullets from roos on them by the comb. But I've never had a Buff Orpington. Still I suspect the larger combs aren't the norm for Buff Orpington pullets.

I was thinking about eventually adopting a roo, but wouldn't of picked a Buff Orpington. Ah, well. I guess we'll wait and see. I'll probably keep it even if it's a "he".

GreenEggs, if you ever have doubts about your light brown Leghorn, let me know. I have one that is for sure a girl and I have lots of pictures of her growing up if you want to compare. I was told a lot when she was younger that she was a boy, but she is absolutely a girl.


On the topic of eggs cracked without the membrane broken, I get those sometimes, too. I also suspect it is from lack of cushioning, as my girls tend to push most of the straw out from under them as they're nesting. I've also noticed that this happens more frequently in boxes that I've seen more than one hen jammed into, so it could be big, clumsy feet doing the damage as well.
