I've read some of this thread, so I didn't know if anyone had posted any older pics of their Salmon Faverolle's. I would love to see them without their beard and muff pecked off. I'm referring to the pictures in the link below.

Our Sal. Faverolle, Daisy. She is super ornery and talkative. She doesn't like to be held at all. This was the one time we managed to wrangle her and keep her from running off.
I had read that they tend to be on the bottom of the pecking order but ours is pretty near the top, just below or Cuckoo Marans.
I didn't notice that either, the poor baby.

Ellie one of my EE's squatted for me today.

Yay for Ellie. I have an EE named Ellie too, by the way.

I keep them inside but I went ahead and had her refund my card. I'm done with baby chicks for a while. 2 shipments in 2 weeks and I'm done. It's an emotional roller coaster.

I completely understand, I am on my 3rd batch after the dog attack. It is an emotional roller coaster for sure.

Well, tonight we had a round-up and moved all the young pullets into the big house. <sigh> They are not babies anymore.

Yes they are completely seperate. I have a space in my coop sectioned off for the young girls so they have a place to be until they are old enough to be in with the big girls. They can still see each other, they just dont have access to each other. I have a few adults who are really mean to new chickens too. But my pullets are old enough now that they should be fine.

I dont know how you all free range your pullets. I cant ever get mine back inside! They always act like they dont know where to go in, and it's nearly impossible to catch them. I have that with every single batch of pullets I raise.

I have a small separate area in the coop too or the little ones. They will be 4 weeks tomorrow. One or two keep somehow getting into the big girls area, so I have to go twice a day to put them back., So far the little ones seem to be okay.

I dread when I let the 16 little ones out to free range in the garden, I hope scratch coaxes them in too.

All mine went into the barn today! Everyone is still separate but they are out of my house!! I still have awhile till they can all be together tho cause the chicks are still a lot smaller than the silkies. The silkies learned how to use a ramp today too, that was funny.

It is so nice to get them out of the house, but then you still miss them being so close, well I do anyway.

Sorry to leave you in the leach - yesterday was our first day of school so obviously things have been a bit crazy (why did I think it would be a good idea to have babies shipped the same week start school??!) The great news is that "sicky" (my 6yo DD named her) is doing great! 48 hours later and you wouldn't know she couldn't stand up two days ago! All six that made it are healthy, happy, and growing already. The best news of all though, is that I got my first egg from our Ancona today (she's about 18 weeks, and a feed store chick, but I'm pretty sure our feed store orders from Meyer)! So it's been a great end to what started out as a rocky week chicken wise. Hoping to get more pictures of the chicklets this weekend, so I'll post as soon as I've got them and introduce you to the girls!

That's is the first time I've really looked at that pic and your right it is all pecked off. I've noticed on a few of their other pics they picked birds that aren't looking that great. I know a few ppl have ordered them but I think a couple never received them or they didn't make it.

How are everyone's babies from last weeks shipments doing? Anyone getting anything this week?

All 16 of my 4 week old chicks are doing well. My salmon faverolle is doing good too and her coloring is coming in so nicely. All of the chicks are feathering in fast and doing well outside. I look forward to integrating with the big girls in the next few weeks. I tried mixing a few of the big girls in with them, but so far they peck at them and scare them, so too soon yet.

My girls turned 4 months old today. I'll try and get some pictures this week. I got some today, but they are in the coop so the quality and lighting of the photos isnt that great.

I decided to start integrating the girls today instead of tomorrow. So far it's going pretty good. At first the big girls didnt even notice the little ones running around, because they are almost the same size as them. Once they started to notice and peck the girls heads, they all went up on the roosts and have been there for the last hour and a half. Sometimes one of the girls will get brave and jump down, then they get pecked by one of the big girls, and back up they go. Im thinking I'll keep everyone inside until Tuesday ot Wednesday before I let them all free range together. So far Sunni is the bravest around the big girls. I guess being in the house with our dog and the cats so much toughened her up.

Wow, yours are 20 weeks now? Wow! They must be big girls then.

Our little D'Uccle squatted for me today.
She is 5 months old. Our Partridge Rock (also 5 mo) is starting to finally grow her comb/wattles and is making noise. She never used to make any noise now she is clucking up a storm. Can't wait to see the D'Uccle's little egg!

Daisy, our White Rock is 17 weeks tomorrow and finally her comb is growing and her wattles too. She is getting a little closer to us too, but not squatting yet. It will be nice when all six of my big girls are laying.

I hope everyone is having a good weekend with all of their chicks, the Meyer's ones and the other ones. I had family in this weekend so my girls are spoiled from all the scratch, sunflower seeds and meal worms that everyone wanted to give them. I think they need some recovery time from all the junk food.

I've been browsing their site trying to pick out what I want for next year if I get chicks, and I'd like some really dark brown egg layers (or even the pretty dark speckled ones). I'll only have room for three or four chicks, so I want to make it count! I've already decided I want a Black Copper Marans and to try for a silver gray Dorking again (which is not a dark egg layer, but I really like their coloration!). Also, those that have gotten Easter-eggers, how many are blue/green egg layers versus brown layers and how friendly are they overall? (Hope y'all don't mind me asking so many questions!)

I have a golden on my 9/30 order and I want to add a bcm and welsummer. I'd love to see pics also ESP the golden. I'm also gonna try and get a dorking next year, I don't need anymore white layers but they are so pretty and I've only heard great things about them.

Lynn I do miss them being inside but I have had chicks inside since April (still trying to get all of the dust & feathers up!), I swear I keep hearing them peep tho. I keep yelling at my cat thinking he is back there pestering them. I let the silkies be in the big coop together with the 8 3 week olds and they were scared of them the silkies are at least 50x bigger but they kept trying to hide in the corner.

Moe stopped sitting in the nest box. I think she was just seriously contemplating being broody. I threw her out of the box about 100 times this weekend and finally came home today and she was wandering around with the other girls.

Also, my BA's finally laid!!

I was wondering how dark their eggs were as compared to their other brown egg layers. I've been browsing their site trying to pick out what I want for next year if I get chicks, and I'd like some really dark brown egg layers (or even the pretty dark speckled ones). I'll only have room for three or four chicks, so I want to make it count! I've already decided I want a Black Copper Marans and to try for a silver gray Dorking again (which is not a dark egg layer, but I really like their coloration!).

I have 4 EE's and as far as I can tell only 1 lays a green egg, Izzy. The other 3 lay brown. 3 have beards and one is clean faced. 3 have pea combs one modified yet still only 1 green egg.
But, I still need to watch BeeBee my black bearded EE, I'm almost positive she lays a creamy colored egg but not 100% yet. Guess if I get 2 green eggs in one day i'll know!
2 are still pretty scared of me and are the only 2 of my 13 girls that run rather than squat. Although, Cleo my clean faced EE is the sweetest to the other chickens and I really like her alot even if she's scared of me. Hope that helps!

Maybe that is where the name came from. We considered Ester, Edie and then Ellie somehow stuck. Maybe I was reading the name on here and it stuck in the back of my brain. Who knows?

I have a 4 week old Welsummer, but of course no eggs from her, but I would love to hear the answers too!

Of my two mature EE's that I got in February, they both laid green eggs. I have 2 more 4 week old ones and they both have the puffy cheeks and green legs. One of the older ones was more friendly then the other, but the one older one I have left now squats for me and is not as scared as she used to be. One of the baby ones is super friendly too and the other is a little more weary of us.

Yay for your BA!

So Oreo our lead chicken, who also was the one bitten by the dog apparently went to battle with a hawk today. All of my chickens both yesterday and today kept going into the run and coop even though they were released to go into the garden. I went to see what was up today because they had put themselves up again. I saw a lot of feathers at the edge of the garden and Oreo looked like she could be missing some feathers, not bad but she did not look like the other BR, Pepper. We still were not sure what happened.

So today, we went out to let the little chicks run in their separate garden area. We sit with them since they are still too small to be alone. Good thing we were there. A huge hawk flew right over us. Daisy the White Rock screamed and all the big chickens and little chicks ran into their areas of the coop. Needless to say all the chickens will be in the coop and run unless I am standing watch in the garden. Poor Oreo, first a dog and now a hawk, but I think she got the best of the hawk because she seemed fine. She didn't lay an egg today though, so maybe it scared her a lot. The big girls will walk in the garden now, if I am with them, but Daisy the 17 week old won't even come out of the coop now, she is still so scared. Raising chickens can be so frustrating, but I am glad no one got killed or injured.

I figured my silkies would be mean to the Meyer babies ESP since 3 of the 4 are roosters but they seemed really scared of them. And I thought it was true about dogs and cats toughening the chickens up since my silkies were raised around dogs and cats and won't think twice about going after my 100lb boxer but after their reaction to the babies that are WAY smaller than them has me second guessing that

I always think of you and your horrible dog experience when I have a stray dog on my property. Last week we had 2 Weineraimers (spelling is wrong I'm sure) run into our yard from the woods and the owner wasn't far behind. My husband happened to be out there and if the chickens weren't in the run there would have been a few dead chickens. The dogs were running all around the run barking like crazy and all the woman said was,"oh, how nice you have chickens!". Um...yea. Get your dogs on a leash was what my husband wanted to say. We even have a large Private Property sign near the edge of the woods so people know they have left the trail and it's a private home. She was really crazy and started saying how she used to live here and cried when she saw the neighbors took down their barn. The very next morning my husband was going for a hike in the woods and saw on the way back that the private property sign was all mangled!!! We pass this sign every day and it's always been fine. She must have been so nuts she crumpled the sign...and its made of tin!!!!! I'm so freaked out I hope I never run into her or her dogs. Anyway, that's at least 4 dogs on our property, that I've seen, since having chickens. Can't even count the hawks! I'm sure with your past experience you are so careful. Its scary!! BTW, when do White Rocks start to lay? Are they early?
