Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

I don't know where she was, but she's back!!

I was out in the coop with the girls and I heard a chicken talking on the other side of the little coop door. I opened it and there she was! She came racing into the coop and ran straight for the food dish. I can't believe she stayed in hiding for so long. She must have been so scared! Poor baby...

I started a thread in Predators and Pests, and someone told me Annie and Alice (the leghorns) are what caught the hawks attention. So I don't think I'll ever be able to free range my chickens without supervision as long as I have those two.

That is so great! Mine hide very well too. After the dog attack earlier in the year, 4 of our surviving chickens were coming back one at a time hours apart, I just kept going out and calling for them.

I heard that hawks see all of our chickens and it doesn't matter the color, that they have very good vision and can see tiny mice and swoop down to get them, so I wouldn't blame Annie and Alice only. All of your chickens are getting the hawks attention. Not that this is any help though. Maybe once they are as large as adult chickens and too big to pick up that will help.

I am so happy that Lilly is back!!!

Meyer doesn't do it as far as I know. I ordered 15 chicks in March and received 15; no extras for warmth. BTW, they all made it alive. They were shipped Mon morning and i didn't get them until Wed about noon. I did die about 5 days later but I thought that was pretty good for the winter time.
I have heard of other hatcheries including male chicks for warmth but can't think of which ones.
But just because they send 20 doesn't mean they will all live. There are so many other factors and you just have to hope they make it. With that many in the box, weak ones could be trampled, weather (to hot or to cold) plays a huge role as well as how gently the PO handles them.

I guess we all have to be more vigilant now that it is getting cooler. I just saw a mangy looking fox in my yard and have been seeing raccoon tracks/poo in my yard as well. Grrr... time to set some traps!

Thanks so much!!! My chicks are coming wed-thurs!!!!

I'm so glad you found her!
I agree, it doesn't matter the color of your chickens. Our splash chicken is the lightest chicken we have and the chick the hawk attacked is black. The white ones may grab their attention but they'll go after anything that they can catch.
We put up netting and only let them out to free range if we are out there now. At least until they are all full sized.
