Meyer would NEVER send out packing peanut cockerals. There are other hatcheries out there that do that however. Meyer DOES send out extra chicks of the same breed and gender that you order if you order enough. Example would be my order of 30 strait run cornishx , I was sent 1 extra st run cornishx . If you were to order order 30 Rhode Island Red pullets, you would get 1 extra RIR pullet. The bigger quantity you order, the more extras they send.
Very true Meyer hatchery is one of the best around here. I got my buff orpingtons from them. Mine did not come in the mail because I live so close that I picked mine up. Unfortunately I lost one of my babies to a hawk ; (
Hey everyone, long time no chat but have been following. All our duckie girls are laying (second row) and I think our cuckoo marans (bottom row) is laying. The egg looks pinkish in the pic but on the ends it is a chocolate brown. The cinnamon girl should be starting anytime now their combs and waddles are big enough and they are squatting a lot.
I guess we all have to be more vigilant now that it is getting cooler. I just saw a mangy looking fox in my yard and have been seeing raccoon tracks/poo in my yard as well. Grrr... time to set some traps!
So true, in my case it is the hawks and owls. I think, hope and pray that we have made the coop and run predator proof. Well for all predators except maybe, bears, mountain lions and humans. I hope none of those are in the area. (Well, I hope in case of the humans, no mean ones are in the area.)
Very nice and cute! It will look so much better with chickens!!!
I learned from all 3 of my orders that you should order in the warmer months and you should also tell Meyer's to call you if they need to make any changes to your order or if chicks do not hatch.
The last order of chicks was my best experience with them. They called me before shipping since a couple chicks did not hatch, so I could change the order a little to still get my 16. The Meyer's person who helped me was extremely helpful and suggested chicks that closely matched the ones I was replacing.
When they arrived July 30th, I had 17 live chicks in the box. They had packed an extra rare breed that unfortunately did not survive the night. I also had one little Columbian Wyandotte that had wry neck, but I was able to nurse her back to health. So be prepared for illnesses the first week. After the first week though, they should be okay.
I agree, the more you order, the more you have a chance of getting an extra one, but they do not add rooster chicks for packing peanuts. They also are great to assist if you do have a problem with your order. With any chicks from anywhere, you always have a chance of chicks that just do not thrive, a lot of that could be from shipping or something hidden inside the chick and in some cases they do recover fine.
So far, out of all 3 of my orders, I always have gotten females. I do not know how that is possible, but I am happy even though.
When I order more I plan on waiting until April, May or after and I will not order again in the winter months. I look forward to seeing your new chicks!!!

I think those two hawks got really close to getting my chickens yesterday. They are all out of sorts and refuse to step one foot outside. This morning my nine little girls went out, and my rooster thought he saw something and let out an alert call and they all scrambled back inside. I'm at that point where I'm scared to let them outside. If only the hawks nest wasnt so close to my coop. It's about 600-800 ft away.
Thanks! Duck eggs taste just like chicken eggs. You can fix them all the same ways. They just have a thicker white and yolk. The duck eggs are great for baking, the best corn bread ever!
However I now think the one marked Cooter may actually be one of our Cinnamon girls. I found one earlier this morning making a new nest. When she finally laid her egg it was the same color as this one. So now not so sure if it really was the marans or not cause she is interested in the nests too.
hello everyone! I hope all your babies are growing well and are healthy. What a busy summer this year, My flock will be 15 weeks old monday. will try and get picks posted monday.
I have a question to ask. I seen somewhere in the forum a list of foods NOT to feed your chickens, but I have just spent 2 hours looking for it and can not find it, does anyone have the link handy? If so thank you. I want to feed them some blueberries but not sure if it is a safe food. They love tomatoes, corn, all kinds of lettuces and cabbage, pears, apples, raw carrots, raw green beans and the list is growing every day. Can they eat raw yams?

I feed my girls blueberries all the time and it doesn't seem to do any harm to them. I think I read somewhere that chickens can have every kind of berry. I'd have to google it to be sure.
Blueberries are fine. The list of bad food is pretty small for chickens. Stuff like nothing sugary, greasy, etc. The only thing I saw on the list that wasn't obvious was peaches. I don't know why. I forgot and tried to feed them some peach the other day and they pretty much turned their noses up at it. A couple of them took a couple bites and they were fine. The other things are no raw beans, no raw potatoes (cooked ok), no cat food, and no tea bags.
So as far as kitchen scraps 99.9% of the stuff is fine.
I think Mona finally laid her first egg. I knew she would do it when we were gone. I asked my husband to keep the eggs sorted by day so I could tell and I found one that wasn't like the others. I'll have to watch the next few days and see if I can catch her.
