Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Thanks! Duck eggs taste just like chicken eggs. You can fix them all the same ways. They just have a thicker white and yolk. The duck eggs are great for baking, the best corn bread ever!

However I now think the one marked Cooter may actually be one of our Cinnamon girls. I found one earlier this morning making a new nest. When she finally laid her egg it was the same color as this one. So now not so sure if it really was the marans or not cause she is interested in the nests too.

They sound really good.

My chickens are still confusing me even though I think only 5 are laying, maybe 6? When my 16 little ones start, I'll be extremely confused!

Blueberries are fine. The list of bad food is pretty small for chickens. Stuff like nothing sugary, greasy, etc. The only thing I saw on the list that wasn't obvious was peaches. I don't know why. I forgot and tried to feed them some peach the other day and they pretty much turned their noses up at it. A couple of them took a couple bites and they were fine. The other things are no raw beans, no raw potatoes (cooked ok), no cat food, and no tea bags.
So as far as kitchen scraps 99.9% of the stuff is fine.


I think Mona finally laid her first egg. I knew she would do it when we were gone. I asked my husband to keep the eggs sorted by day so I could tell and I found one that wasn't like the others. I'll have to watch the next few days and see if I can catch her.

Wait, no cat food? I thought canned cat food is good for molting? Maybe you mean dry?

Refresh my memory, what breed is Mona? That is great that your husband will sort the eggs out for you. Good guy!

Here is the chicken treat list.

Some things worth noting: Most berries are okay. My girls, at least, will not eat the berries that are not good--which is pretty much just the 'choke cherries' that grow around here.

Citrus is highly debated on whether it is okay or not. Many people feed their birds citrus without issue. I can't find a reason not to feed citrus, so I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you're giving them citrus all the time.

Avocado is a big one--DO NOT give your birds the skin or pit of avocado. The flesh is okay in moderation. I personally avoid it completely, just to be safe (not that my family eats avocado all that much anyway).

Large amounts of salt can be harmful to chickens, but if it's something that is just salted to taste like french fries or popcorn and they have fresh water available, it should be okay.

NO chocolate or anything caffeinated! And candy and other sugary foods should be avoided because they are as good for chickens as they are for us.

Dry or undercooked beans and green potato skins both contain toxic substances and should not be fed to chickens.

And finally, absolutely NO moldy foods!


The reason cat food is considered a no-no, according to the above page, is because a component in it can be deadly to chickens at a high enough level. It doesn't specify dry or wet (that I saw, anyway, but I just finished some homework so my brain has powered off for the day).

Campi- Golden Campine- she is turning into such a beautiful chicken.

Here is Daisy- WR, my only almost 20 week old - not laying yet and not squatting yet. Beside her is Oreo- BR- The dog bite survivor, hawk fighting, ultimate master and queen of the chicken coop here. She is a terror to any creature that is not human. All the chickens fear her. She is sweet to me though. She is almost 30 weeks old.


Cuckoo- CM - Her and her sister are the huge chicks in the group. I can tell them apart by who has more white on their backs, otherwise they are identical.

Ash - RIR - almost 30 weeks old

Olivia - EE- I think she is the prettiest of my big girls- almost 30 weeks

Blackie - BA- She is almost as big as the Marans and her black shines blue a lot now in the sun. She is one of the sweethearts of the group.


Splash - Blue Andulasion or Orpington - She is also a sweet and friendly chick

Sorry to harass you guys with more pictures. They are just growing so fast!

The hawk landed in our yard today. It must have been a male hawk, it was so many colors of orange, brown, red and yellow and I was surprised how big it was, I see why my chickens hide in fear. I don't think it is the same one that Oreo battled with, because I believe she would not have survived a show down with this one. Needless to say they only free ranged when I could watch them. I worked a lot in the coop today and garden so I could keep watch.

Mona is a Partridge Rock. The hard part about figuring out who's egg is who's is that Marble (BR) lays a different looking egg every day. It's never the same shape or size or even color (although it's generally the same color, sometimes it has spots). Waiting to get 4 eggs in one day.
Amber was in the nest box with Sky (BA) tonight while Sky was laying her egg. That's the first time I've seen her in the nest box since she was attacked. Maybe she'll start laying again soon. That would be great!

Those hawks! Seems everywhere I turn I see someone talking about them. We haven't had any close calls since the one. I'm not taking chances though.

I will definitely not be letting my girls out until we can get a run put up for them. This morning I let the girls out and they weren't out for more than 30 seconds when that hawk came out of nowhere an started attacking them. Sunni was in the little door about to head outside and I was standing right next to her, and the hawk flew past and tried to get Sunni. Sunni flew backwards and ran and hid in the coop. I ran outside because 4 of my girls were still out there, and I watched that hawk try to attack on of my girls, and then Annie or Alice (not sure who) was behind their old outdoor cage that I have propped up on its side by the barn, and the hawk was lunging at the cage with its feet trying to get her. I ran at the hawk waving my arms and yelled "GET OUT OF HERE!" It flew away and I quickly put the girls back inside and slammed all of the doors and windows shut.

The hawk is the same size as my 19 week old girls, but that isn't stopping it from trying to attack my chickens no matter how big they are. The thing had the nerve to attack my girls when I was standing right there! It was launching itself off their backs!! I am just shaking with anger right now. I can't even get Sunni to eat her breakfast because she is so scared.

I'm pretty sure that's what got my neighbors BR who was full grown! I don't think they necessarily carry away their prey. Since they don't fear to much they will kill and eat what they can right there rather than carrying them away. So even full grown hens are at risk. Poor Sunni, like she needs more stress Thank goodness you were out there for them!

Can't wait to see what your EE's look like too. I realized my clean faced EE, Cleo, has a noodle comb and she lays brown. So I guess the noodle comb could mean brown eggs but 2 other EE's of mine have pea and one lays brown and one green so we just never know.
My CM was not large in size compared to my other chickens as she grew so I'm not sure if it's a CM thing that they grow fast or mine was slow. She's a bit smaller in size compared to my other girls but not by much.
Do SF's always have beards? They are so pretty!
Andi is so pretty! And I still love Daisy... she looks so majestic sitting there! Grrrr those hawks!

Hawks are vicious creatures. They aren't afraid of anything when it comes to chickens. I have read several stories on here of hawks that tried attacking people chickens when they were standing right there!

Normally I feel bad about keeping my chickens locked up, but they all seem to know that it is safer in the coop right now.

I know!!!!!! Can't stand them!!! I have a constant eye on the garden area when they are out now. I am thinking of getting a baby monitor so I can hear any disturbances too. I can watch the whole area on video, but the it has no sound.

I think my chickens are laying less due to all this stress, poor girls.

My one Ellie is the one with the single or noodle comb, it's still so small so I am not sure what it will finally look like. I guess I just have big CM's.

Man your story makes me so scared to let my girls out at all. I'll definitely arm myself with an air gun while they are free ranging so we can scare anything off. I wish I could trust my dogs with the chickens so they could protect them. I'm wondering now if it really was our dogs that attacked Amber. After we found that large puncture wound I started wondering. We have seen both dogs carry around little chicks like they are toys but we've never seen them bother our larger girls (like Amber) so I'm not sure. We'll never know.

Olivia looks just like Amber. I love that style EE!
