Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Someone on the cochin thread said to drop food coloring on the vent of the chickens you are curious about their eggs or if they are laying yet. Since I can't catch our cochin in the act, I tried this. I did 2 drops of a different color on each brown egg layers vents. Our BA (Sky) laid and it had a tiny streak of blue on it! Hopefully the rest will work and at least 3 of them will lay! Our Partridge Rock is in the nest now but sometimes she just sits there and doesn't lay.

Easy way to figure things out!
Can you come to my house and do it to mine??

Our Partridge Rock laid her egg, it has a huge green spot on it. I like this method! :)
Neat, once my 16 little ones start, I may have to try this. Congrats on the first eggs!

Agree there!

I believe Olivia my ex-broody EE is now molting early. She still has not laid any eggs and is looking pretty ragged feather wise. She looks healthy and acts healthy otherwise. I think I also see signs of new feathers around her neck. She is just a early bloomer, I guess. How long does the molting last? Does anyone know. She still has plenty of feathers so I am not too worried, just wish she would lay those pretty green eggs.

Same with my EE, Izzy. She is the only one molting and no green eggs from her. I am just assuming she will start laying eggs again when the days get longer so not til February I think. I haven't noticed any new feathers coming in but she doesn't let me to close to her now that she's not squatting for me.
I am chicken sitting for my neighbor (the one getting 25 new chicks from Murray McMurray) and all of hers are molting like crazy! Feathers everywhere and they are so ragged looking. She has 12 hens and I get from 2-5 eggs from her girls/day. They are about 2 1/2 years old I think, so I guess a few are still laying even though they're molting. All I know is I want Leghorns like hers... they all put out eggs that are 2.8 oz and up!! They're huge!!!

Lynn: The length of the molt depends on the bird. Some chickens go through a rapid molt only lasting about 4 weeks, and others can last up to 6 months. There isn't really a way to know how long it will take. One of my older hens molted this year, and hers only lasted 5 weeks. My rooster is molting and it has been 6 weeks and he still hasn't lost hardly any feathers or grown in new ones.

Nancy: What kind of Leghorns does your neighbor have? Just the standard white? Annie and Alice my Leghorns are only 26 weeks and they are egg laying machines! I get maybe 13 eggs every 14 days from each of them. Since they started laying 9 weeks ago, they have each only missed maybe 2-3 days each. It's crazy! I can't believe your neighbor's girls are still laying through a molt.

Still no eggs from Amber, Lilly, and Lizzie. One of them has been making a nest in all 5 nest boxes in the bottom row (I have 3 rows of 5 nest boxes) every morning before I get outside. I'm not sure which one of them is doing it. Maybe Lizzie the Campine??

Sunni's chicken diapers came the other day. She look's so cute in them! They are a tiny bit too big, so we have to make some adjustments to them. We are making the move into the house very slow so she doesn't get stressed or overwhelmed. This morning she was asking to go in the house. So she must like it! Here are a couple pictures of her in her new diaper. She has a navy blue one with light blue flowers on it as well. I like the pink one the most.

(this picture is a little fuzzy because she kept moving right when my slow camera would finally capture the picture.

She is adorable!!!!! How does the diaper work out... how many times do you have to 'change' her.
The leghorns are from Murray McMurray as far as I know. They're just normal everyday Leghorns. I just can't get over how small the bird is and it produces such a huge egg!

The diapers have a clasp on the part that goes across her back that unclips, and a piece of elastic is sewn through each side of the fabric on the back, and the elastic goes around her wings to keep it in place. Then there is a piece of fabric that goes across the belly and attaches to the poopy pouch. I hope I explained that right? It would be easier to explain with pictures but I don't have access to a computer to upload them right now. I'll try and get some pictures of just the diapers tomorrow.

Sunni still isn't quite used to them, so she doesn't want to poop in it yet. When she gets used to it I will have to clean out the diaper every 2 hours or so. The inside of the pouch is lined with a waterproof liner, but the lady who makes them suggests that you still line the inside with a paper towel or panty liners so the stitching doesn't dissolve over time.

LOL that's funny.... I didn't know chickens could 'hold' their poop!
My hubby said he is drawing the line at a chicken in the house with a diaper... actually any animal with a diaper. I have a friend whose 3 dogs wear diapers cause they piddle all over the place all day long.

Yeah, Olivia is the same, she does not let me get close to her either. We have feathers everywhere as well from Olivia and from the 16 little ones too. I like the idea of eggs everyday that are 2.8 oz each or more. Your neighbor will have a lot of chickens once the new ones come! We found out that another one of our neighbors has a chicken and he asked to borrow our rooster, my husband explained that we do not have a rooster. Then he told my husband that his one chicken that he has lays 2 eggs a day!

I've never seen this chicken, but I guess he could have one in his big back yard, but 2 eggs a day? I believe he is a little confused....

Hopefully it is a rapid molt, she does look pretty rough, but she still is fully covered with feathers, no bald spots, she just seems extra fluffy lately and is losing her gold and looking more blue.

Sunni is very cute in her diaper and I like the pink too.

I was wondering as well. What about when she lays an egg?

We don't even have an inside dog, so I imagine the same line would be drawn here. Chicks until 6 weeks are okay, but preferably they are out at 2 to 4 weeks.

Lynn- what are your EE's looking like? Can you tell what color they're going to be? Do they have beards? I love watching EE's grow up!
They are looking pretty nice now, I'll try to get pictures, so far they are more shades of gold and brown. I am hoping I'll see more blue in one of them soon too, but so far not yet. The one I had and lost earlier in the year, Maddie, was more gold and brown and she was beautiful. I wouldn't mind having another one like her. I'll try to get pictures of them soon, I think they are almost 14 weeks now. We have family visiting for awhile, so I have not had my "chicken time" lately. I miss my special time with the girls.
