Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Oh my! She just scratched herself? I never heard that!somehow Oh boy hopefully that doesn't happen I would be freaked out if they were seeping and I didn't know what in the world happened!

You might have missed my earlier post that something attacked her. The skin on her crop was ripped off so her crop is exposed and kind of hanging there. Somehow she tore it open. Hopefully she'll be well enough to eat again tomorrow.

Your post did not copy over. Did you return that chicken food? Are they eating better now? That's scary, at least you have smart chickens and they knew not to eat it. We just use Dumor layer for ours right now and they sure eat it up.

I'm so excited , I got 54 eggs today!

I had to go collect them five times today, but one of them still froze on me.

Oh wow!! That's a ton of eggs. We've now resorted to giving eggs away to the neighbors too, we have so many. We get 16 one day, 11 the next and back and forth like that all week. There is not a skelter big enough for your eggs though! It's good that you sell them.

In this photo, the large white egg is a ceramic one I have in there to keep the girls laying in the nest. The brown one is from my black copper maran, the small white one is from my black silkie, the small tan one is from my splash silkie, and the green one is the first egg from my easter egger! All these girls are from Meyer.


Here's an up close shot of the 4 eggs. I love my maran eggs because they are speckled.

Nice, that's the best part of looking in the nest box and seeing a variety of colors isn't it? Congrats on your new layers!

One lonely little brown egg...
Luckily I caught her in the nest box this morning, and waited around for her to lay, so I could get it quick before it froze. It is 9 degrees outside!

Can't wait to see the basket full, although they seem to get used up before we ever get to that point...

Can my girls be molting?? At 21weeks?? There are so many feathers. Is it a regular replacement of feathers at their age or an actual molt? People seem to agree that chickens don't molt the first year. I am just not sure.

Yes, mine started early too and seemed to go through a small one around 18 to 20 weeks and a bigger one around 30 weeks. I think the really bad molts occur after a year, but when mine molted at 30 weeks they seemed to lose a lot of feathers too.

Mona scratched herself and scratched a hole in her exposed crop. All her food and water are leaking out now. DH tried to super glue it but it came back open. He said he had to super glue it again and then added 3 stitches. They took her food and water away for the evening so it can have a chance to heal a little. I read a thread on here of a chicken that had half of it's breast muscle and half of it's crop ripped off. They super glued it back together and it lived! So I'm confident the little hole will be ok.
Luckily this isn't our favorite chicken so if she doesn't make it we won't be overly devastated. Not that we won't be sad but it won't be like losing one of our favorites.

My poor husband! He doesn't like doing any of this kind of stuff, the animals are my thing and all the crap usually happens when I'm gone. I can't even list the "emergencies" he has had to handle when I've been gone.

I hope she is doing better, so sorry to hear. Glad she is not one of your favorites, but it's still sad and frustrating.

So we're pulling up carpet and sucking up the excess water with a wet vac. So much fun! Everything falls apart at the same time it seems. No I am waiting on the next appliance to fail.

How is she tonight?

I did return the feed, 100 lbs, and got one new bag of the same brand but in pellets and a bag of the flock raiser. They are eating both!! I really think the feed was a bit off. I kept the other 50lb bag because it was shoved in a corner and I couldn't get it out but I may try a bit in a few weeks and see what happens. They will take it back opened or unopened so thats not a problem.

Ugh, nothing worse than water in the basement. Things always happen in multiples. I hope nothing else goes on you.
After my disastrous December with all the broken appliances, our water heater sprung a little leak but luckily it had 2 months left on the warranty. Still cost $700 for labor and some parts!
Then when they were down there they brushed against a piece of wood on the wall which proceeded to crumble into pieces and we saw termites

Couple days later we saw there was still some kind of very slow leak in the furnace. In order to fix one stinking corroded pipe, they would have to move the newly installed water heater and take apart the 35 yr. old furnace, put the heater back together and put the water heater back. WAY over $1000 and there's no saying the pipe could be fixed properly. Sooooo, now we are pricing out new heating systems. Luckily we have been saving for this for 2 years because we knew it would be coming eventually but boy

Even with all that, I hate a wet basement even more!


Well, my feed store is totally going to ban me soon... I changed my order to the end of March because hopefully I can get a Silkie or 2 around then. They have about 15 different breeds
coming in but on hold I have 2 Salmon Faverolle, 2 EE's and 2 California Grays/Production Black (they look like a BR but smaller and lay a white egg) If the breeder has the true Ameraucana I will get them and skip the EEs and if she has the Silkies I may just have to sneak them in. shhhhh,

Oh, and if the breeder has the Leghorn I'll just get one Prod. Black and 1 Leghorn. hehehe

Update on Mona: After the stitching she was still leaking. DH couldn't tell if it was the same hole or a new one. He couldn't see his old stitches at all. I got home this morning and helped him. We filled it with a think liquid nails style glue and it wouldn't hold, air bubbles kept coming out. So we stitched it closed again. We let her sit all day with no food/water. Then I gave her a little water around 7. It didn't seem to be leaking. When we got home from dinner we gave her one more sip of water and about a quarter size amount of scrambled egg. She was starving! Then I went and checked on her and the stuff was coming out again and the stitches were gone. I brought her back into the bathroom to clean it out and as I went to set her down she struggled and caught her claw in the hole, her nail made another hole, then she ripped it out making a huge hole! We let her drink a lot of water to flush all the food out. Then I wrapped her in a towel and flipped her on her back and held her while DH sewed her up again. After sewing her we covered it in super glue and then glued the little piece of skin that's left and the feathers down. Then I took some wrap and wrapped her all up so she can't get her claw or beak in there and rip the stitches out again. Hopefully she's sleeping tonight without picking at it so it can have a chance to seal. It's so hard because she's active and hungry. It's like she has no idea she is hurt. We've talked about putting her down but it's too hard when she doesn't seem sick or badly hurt. We're going to try one more day but if it doesn't hold tomorrow we won't have a choice since she'll be starving to death and that's just not fair to her.
I don't think we'll give her any food tomorrow. Just vitamin water a little at a time. I don't want to stress out the crop or stitches.


Boy all these things going wrong don't sound fun! Our only problem is the roof leaking on our other house. (knock on wood).


On another note, we got our batch of eggs. I'll try to upload a pic shortly. She sent 6 extras. She wrote on the box, hold at PO call ### and my phone number. Of course the PO didn't call when I was home at 10 and could've picked it up. Instead they dropped it off on my porch (sideways even though it had a "this side up" on it) in the rain and snow! I didn't get it until 7pm tonight. I unwrapped them all and are letting them come to room temp before putting them in the incubator. I'm not going to start turning them until saturday so the air cells can have a chance to reset.

I hope you are able to get her crop to seal and that she'll recover.

Our PO is like that too. They are never careful with packages. I honestly don't think they even take time to read the "this side up" and "fragile" signs on the boxes. Which is why I got so nervous the night my girls were shipped from Meyer.

Do you all remember how I said a month or so back that my EE, Amber, laid a darkish brown egg with grayish brown spots? It turns out that wasn't her. It was one of my mix breed hens (not from Meyer). Amber actually has never laid an egg. She just started squatting for me on Wednesday, and the space between her pelvic bones is just starting to widen. She'll be 9 months old next week and she still hasn't laid an egg!

Well, here's to hoping she'll lay a green egg. The chances are unlikely since she seems to be a mix of some sort, but I can always hope! lol

I would love to see some pics of meyer birds people have gotten through them!!! I ordered recently for middle of march and I am having trouble hanging in there!! The wait is soooooooo hard...lol I ordered BPR,EE,Silkies,Red Stars,& BA if anyone has pics of those I would defently like to see those even more!!! Any pics would be nice though!!

I hope Mona gets better. They need to come up with the chicken cones like the have the dog cones to put on their heads! That would be awesome then they can't pick at themselves!
