Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

I'm sorry to hear she didn't pull through.

I put the chicks outside this morning and watched them for awhile. One of the cochins was sitting all hunched up and sleeping while everyone else ran around eating and checking things out. I picked her up and tucked her in my arm while I finished my chores and she fell asleep there. I brought her back inside to keep her warm. I forced vitamin/acv/water into her with a syringe every hour and by 2 she was eating and drinking on her own so I returned her to the group. She was still moving slower but she was at least eating. By tonight when we brought them in she was one of the first ones at the food bowl in the brooder. So glad she is doing better!
I think it's important to keep them hydrated when they have no interest otherwise they go downhill fast.
I can't wait until DH builds their mini coop so we don't have to bring them back and forth. Hopefully he gets around to it these next 2 days while he is off work. I'll be out of town so I won't be able to stay on him about it or put my 2 cents in. I'm sure he'll do a great job if he gets around to it.

Good news, a friend of ours is going to take our EE roo and the other EEs plus 2 other chicks. I love when friends buy our chicks. I know they will have a really good home. I'm letting her buy some on our alternate list only because I like knowing where they are going. :)

I had a day of dreaming today. We weren't planning on buying a new place with land until 2016 but we talked and decided we might be able to make it work now. I found an awesome place on 10 acres less than a mile from a friend's place. The neighbors on both sides have kids around my daughter's age. I can't pass it up so I emailed our finance guy today to see if we could get it to work.

If it does you know our first thing would be expanding the existing chicken coop/run and getting more chickens!!! :)

Olive didn't make it. Poor girl. Every day I was ready to move her back outside she took a turn for the worse. She kept getting better and yesterday when I checked on her before bed, she was laboring to breathe and she just smelled bad. I've determined her crop was impacted further down her system than could be fixed by oil and massage and grit. I guess surgery would have been the only fix. I have yet to find a vet that will even give advice on a chicken let alone administer to one. I feel like I have been teaching them! Anyway, while it is sad, I've decided the only way passed this is to add a light brahma to my May order and call her Olive.

So sorry. She put up a good fight!!

I hope your cochin is still okay. I think sometimes chickens can have bad days just like us.

I need to find friends to take chickens from me, I would give Daisy away so fast. Here she is in day 3 of chicken jail. She is laying eggs on the floor, I didn't think to put in a nest box. I should have added a cardboard border on the cage too since she is now decorating the shed with pine shavings. I will have a mess to clean up when I move her back in with the flock.

That would be awesome if you can move to 10 acres!!! So jealous!!!! I hope that it works out

My flock of 21 hens are getting along great. The older 5 are still in charge but they all now seem to gather all together better since Daisy has left. She really was controlling the younger ones more then I even thought. They are enjoying some clovers that we picked for them since they can't free range until the city is done with construction we have been bringing them treats. I think we over compensated though since they have runny stomachs now. Oops! So no more treats for a few days, maybe just dirt and worms, no more fruits and veggies.

Before removing Daisy they all would never gather in one spot before, a lot of the young ones always stayed back until Daisy was done eating and then try to sneak something.

I got an email saying that the Meyer chicks departed the Denver facility last night at 8pm. I am in Boulder, but my daughter is in Louisville and her PO is closer and smaller than the one that serves my address so I sent the chicks to her address.
I hope the PO calls me any minute. They must be there right?
I think I have everything ready...water, food, the light has been on for three days making sure I don't set anything on fire......so, I guess I'll wait here until they call.....

Chicks are here and settling in. One was DOA, it is really sad, it was folded under the packing bedding stuff. It looks like it was crushed when they packed the box. It looks almost decomposed, it's been dead for a while. One other isn't looking very good. The rest are amazingly active. Eating and drinking like crazy.
I'll get pictures soon. I am trying to figure out who is who.

So glad they arrived and I am sorry to here of the DOA one. I look forward to your pics!!!

Great also that they came today instead of tomorrow!

That's amazing!!! 10 acre lots don't even exist around me. Well, they do, for $10 million :) But you get a nice house on it too

If you could have as many chickens as you wanted... how many would you get? I think 25-30 would be a good number. And I'd want an EE or Ameracauna Roo and CM Roo.
Oh to dream.

I'm so curious to see what happens when Daisy back in. Hopefully she gets knocked down a few pegs. I love the pic of the whole flock

Sorry about the DOA, must have gotten trampled on. Can't wait to see pics!!

Zoning laws in that city would allow us to have 30 chickens. That would go so fast! First the run they have there would definitely need to be expanded. It might hold our 10 right now but that's about it. The coop is a decent size, maybe 8x8, and is split into two sections already, each with their own door to the outside. One side doesn't have a run yet though so that would need to be done (easy enough).
On our list of wants:
a maran or two
a brabanter
another EE or two and/or a cream legbar
a rooster of some sort, thinking maybe a maran so the EE's would hatch olive eggers :)
a wyandotte or two - I really want a red laced blue
a brahma
an orpington or two (maybe a buff and a blue or lavender)
a welsummer
maybe a penedesenca
another polish or two
a white sultan

and we want to raise our own meat birds, probably a turken/cornish or rock mix. So let's see that, about 17 additional layers so that leaves us 3 meat birds. Actually we will have either the maran or welsummer in the batch of chicks we have now, so that's one off the list. And we'll have a bantam EE so we may only need 1 more of those. I think we only need 3-4 hens and a rooster for the meat birds. Plus, who's going to come count my chickens! I don't think it will matter if we are over a little the limit. Once our laying flock gets old we may just let the girls hatch chicks once a year to replace the older girls and have any roosters for meat. Then we wouldn't need a separate meat flock, except those breeds grow a little faster and I don't know if a once a year hatch would be enough to keep us fed all year.
So many decisions!
We also eventually want to get goats for dairy and meat (for dog food mainly) and a couple horses. I hope the house doesn't get sold before we have a chance to make an offer on it. DH is going to go see it Sunday morning. Today and tomorrow are his days off but the weather is raining and snowing these 2 days so he doesn't want to trek around the property in that. I don't blame him! He's already started doing the work on the current house that needs to be done before we can put it on the market. Our house is nowhere near ready to be shown! We have so many projects that need to be done that weren't a rush since we thought we had a year! Now we have a week, two at the most, to get everything done! AHHH!

There's actually an old homestead on 60 acres about a mile from the 10 acre house that's for sale for the same amount. It has a HUGE barn, loafing sheds, old barns, and ponds on the property. I'm sure the house needs a lot of work but we might take a look at that one this weekend too. :)
