Gorgeous!
LOL, I won't put them in until about 5-6 weeks so it should be ok by then.I'm going to do this with my new babies. I already have a crate, so I figured I have nothing to lose. Just have to wait until the little ones can't squeeze through the bars. LOL!
I'm just going to put it right into my run that has sand in it so I was thinking of just burying the bottom and putting a bit more sand and then they can scratch around in it and it won't matter if they kick it out. We'll see. Still have lots of time@NotableNancy Dog crates work well, but the bedding will go EVERYWHERE unless you are using the plastic sided ones. My friend put cardboard barriers around it to try to keep the bedding in.
I was always changing my orders too, I think they're used to that happening. Oooh, I want a purple chicken too!!! And a copper marans too!Oh goodness. I just changed my order AGAIN! I had to get another light brahma, so one of those, a black copper marans, and a lavender orp. I can't believe I spent $35 on one chick, but the hubby thought it would be really cool to have a purple chicken. Anything I can of to get him onboard is a bonus! I'm pretty excited myself. But this pushes back my chicks from May until August. Hoping the orp is as stunning as the pics. Anybody have one yet?
The only problem is them sneaking through the bars but it could work once they're big enough, I think. There is a problem with the nesting material being knocked out the sides, but since it is in the coop that wouldn't matter. I learned my lesson with Daisy's jail cage since it is in our storage shed and she has pretty much scratched pine shavings all over the huge shed. Her release date is tomorrow, I figured I would introduce her back right in the middle of the day when they are all out in the run digging around. I know usually you introduce a chicken back at night and sneak them in, but in her case I need the others to be aggressive to her to hopefully put her in her place. We had some really hot days last summer and my BB seemed fine through it. The only one that panted a lot was one of my EE's. But she pants every time she lays an egg![]()
LOL Can't wait to see your purple chicken!! That would be really cool!!!
I was thinking of just getting a large or XL dog crate to use as a grow out pen for a few weeks.... has anyone done this??
I'm going to a party in about 2 weeks (going away party for a friend's son that is joining the Navy and the mom is the one that gave me the wine for my eggs) and my sister and I came up with the idea to bring eggs and write my email/phone # on each egg instead of business cards! These are all the people that I would be selling to so I def want to do some type of 'marketing' at the party. Any other ideas?? I think I have 2 takers already on my bartering idea... sounds like I will be getting a lot of wineFunny thing is, I don't drink it. But DH does so that's just as good. LOL Keep the hubby happy
Even better!!!That sounds like a great marketing idea! Party stores and craft stores sell individual cupcake holders and small Chinese food containers, maybe you can package each egg in one of those with some shredded paper or Easter grass for safe traveling? You could make labels for the containers or put your info inside. Just a thought. Good luck.
Oh wow, I hope they come down in price before I order more!
That's how I do with my smaller broody cages, no worry about mess then.Gorgeous!

Well, I put Daisy back in with the rest of the flock and it was an epic failure.
It was fine for about 3 to 5 minutes then she started chasing the younger ones again when she was in the coop and a few of them flew to the top roost to avoid her. Three of the older hens tried to control her, but she just continued harassing the younger ones . She started hopping on the backs of two of them and pecking their heads and combs again.
It was a completely different flock without her, I pulled her out again and she is back in her cage. She won't be going back in with them again, so now we have to decide what to do with her.![]()
Awww, crud. I guess it's just her nature. Absolutely nothing you can fix. Maybe try Craigslist. You may get a taker... either for eggs or for eating. Or, maybe soup for you???Well, I put Daisy back in with the rest of the flock and it was an epic failure.
