Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Quick question for all of you with bantams. Are they flighty?

My daughter uses a bantam for 4H showmanship. Most of the kids do. We have a d'uccle and she isn't flighty at all. Our friend has a d'anver and silkie that aren't flighty. In fact they both sat at fair with them on their laps letting people pet them. My daughter didn't spend much time with her. She's just a calm bird. One of our calmer actually. We added 5 bantams to our flock recently. We love them. And their eggs don't taste any different. They are perfect for pickled eggs, kids portions, and halving recipes though.

Other then 4-6 breeds of bantam that it was breed out of. they are some of the most flighty skittish birds you can own but some people who do free range and don't mind them roosting in the trees at night and like tiny eggs (they have a awesome flavor if you can find them) they are perfect they don't eat much eather. I helped raise a flock of 15-40 bantams (once they got out of their pens we couldn't get them back in so we don't know the exact number) with my grandma they have an amazing predator sense but that means you can't get with in 5 feet of them eather. So it would be worth your while to get them young and tame them the best you can

Thank you both for the bantam advice. I am thinking of getting some to sneak in under one of the broodies when I have another. Right now I have not had a broody for a couple days.

Three nights in the broody breaker seems to be the key to stop them, even if you feel guilty leaving them there.

well they have been on lockdown for 3 days and the 21 day is supost to be on monday but i have seen no external pips and i'm worryied that nothing will hatch which would really suck becase hatching eggs was my last ditch effort to get the breeds that i wanted heck the only reason i even consideed hatching eggs is because shipping for live chicks is outrageous i wish we had a hatchery here in texas we do but the min order is 15 birds i don't need that many.

You can always sell the extras or post an ad to see if you can find someone to go in on the order with you. You can bet there are others that want to order chicks but don't want 15 either.

Thanks for the responses! The tractor supply welded wire is just what I was going to get! My chickens will be just under 8 weeks old when we let them loose in the run. I think their heads are still small enough to fit through a 2" hole, so, I don't want to chance it! Plus, if we get babies again next year, they would be protected, as well. I just don't want to do the entire run in hardware cloth. It is so much more money. But, if that was the only way to protect the flock from predators, I would do it. Glad to hear that the welded wire has worked well for you guys.

I cannot wait to move the chicks from the brooder into the coop. The girls and or boys (a few are still questionable) are getting so big and my garage is so dusty! I don't know if we will ever get it clean!! My husband's poor cars are all white.

Here's one of our girls, Guinevere

I just love the Barred Rocks and Dominiques. They are by far the friendliest. Yes, that is chicken poop on my shirt. Welcome to the life of a chicken lover!

I was going to move the chicks to the coop last Sunday but we didn't finish the run and I figured it would be best to move them after we have done most of the hammering. The move will be traumatic enough - for them and me! Lol

Wish us luck!
Boy, I was only gone a day and I missed out with my 2 cents

Sounds like you handled it perfectly! Hope you post pics when you're done. I love looking at everyone's set-up
My BR Henrietta is one of my favorites. So chatty and always comes up to me to talk, even when free ranging.

but it will be another two months or so until i can get the money togather i can afford the chicks but with the shipping just over $100 for all the birds i want

that's a really neat observation! I may add some later. I had settled on heavy fowl initially, not knowing what daytime predators we'd be contending with. Being on a ridgeline, I keep imagining hawks are gonna swoop in. Lol I dunno.
