Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Thanks, y'all! They are too precious! Elda is already trying to fly out of the brooder, though. She would spend all her time on my lap if I gave her the chance, I would bet. And Georgie and Louise are so curious! Louise nearly made it up onto the EcoGlow already! Kit has been noisy and Mabel's about the opposite--until it starts getting dark! Then, little Mabey has a set of lungs in her! Love these babies already!

The past two years of getting chicks from them, I've always gotten a weak little runt in my mix and managed to nurse them back to life still. This year, I did kind of get a runt (Kit), but not a weakling, so that's a relief! Everyone's been bouncing around and checking out the brooder between naps! They're all asleep under the EcoGlow now. I was concerned Kit wouldn't figure out to go underneath because she kept standing next to it and peeping like she couldn't find her friends. Phew! Between them and the hen I picked up yesterday, I'm gonna be super busy over the next few weeks! This is the kind of summer vacation I look forward to, though!

I agree they are all adorable! But those Marans are super cute! I'm glad I added one to my order! Mine is tentatively named Collette...French name for a French origin bird!

e Oh, I love the name Collette! Louise was almost Collette, except I already had named Georgette and I didn't want two -ette names. Georgette and Louise are both French names as well.

How come everytime I look at the Meyer's webpage I decide I want another type of chicken??? NOW, I REALLY want a silkie on top of everything else. Even though I know they can't be sexed at hatching and chances are as good that I will get a roo as a female...and we won't know until my son & I are pretty darn attached. AND they are pretty much just for looks.

It makes absolutely no sense right now...especially for my 1st flock.

But I WANT ONE SO BAD!!!!

Maybe if I can't get my Cream Legbar...

But the silkies are sold out too!

How are you liking the EcoGlow so far? I bought the Premier1 heating plate version to try. Glad everyone is doing well!

Blue Orpington: Flora or possibly Jasmine

I got the EcoGlow last year and loved it! Before then, all I had was heat lamps and they are miserable! No more day/night cycle weaning, no more fire hazard, no more chicks relying on heat for so long! I got a second EcoGlow this year, too. I wanted to try the Permier1 plate, but I got impatient waiting on reviews of it, so I went ahead and got what I knew I liked. Now I'm hearing the Premier plate is just as great, but oh well. I guess if I need another one next year, I'll try out a Premier plate.


Love the names! All my hens were 'honey' at some point, but then I started saying 'henny' instead. Now I use 'henny' whether it's a hen or not. Force of habit, I guess! And I changed my babies' names about a million times before I settled on the ones I used, so I totally get the subject to change part, there.

The only reason why I got the Premier1 vs the EcoGlow was price. I work outside the home, so the fire risk was too great for me to use a heat lamp. I'm paranoid. I'm just starting out & needed to buy something anyways, so I figured I would spend a little more upfront & have something safer, that uses less energy to run & no bulbs to replace. I have several friends with chickens & they might want to borrow it - we just have to be extremely careful about disinfecting & making sure our brooding schedules don't overlap. I've done infection control nursing in hospitals, so the disinfection aspects I can handle

I've heard that with the premier1 to cover the top with press & seal to make clean up a snap. I just did that with my plate & it really seems like it's going to be super easy. The top doesn't get hot at all! I will definitely report back as I use it.

I added wood chips to the run and they are a mix of cedar and pine. Smells so much better now and the girls like them. Here are a few pics of some of them. I made sure to add in my 3 EE's, beards and all.

Hey Lynn, how much cedar is in those chips? I don't know if it applies to outside the coop, but airborne oils from cedar shavings can lead to respiratory issues in poultry. I would assume there is quite a bit of oil in them if they are very fragarent. I just wanted to mention that, in case you notice the girls sneezing or wheezing, then I would out those chips.

I just put in my order for more CornishX on the 28th, but it's not nearly as fun as ordering all the beautiful layers.

And to those of you interested in meat birds, I butchered my first freedom rangers yesterday along with some of my cornishx pullets. I knew that the FRs are supposed to take 2 weeks longer to get as large as the CX but I'm disappointed to say that I was not impressed with the FRs finished carcass or their age/gain ratio. I ended up cancelling my oder from the freedom ranger hatchery and went with Meyers CX, I was SO happy Meyer had them available for such a close hatch date. I will post pictures and weights when I get a chance tomorrow or Wednesday.

I admit I'm a little slow, but are you ordering the "white broiler"? I don't see anything specifically listed as CX. I definitely don't want to get the wrong kind.
