Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Oh my gosh! Thank you for this. I was trying to figure out how to keep the litter in. Duh! Don't use it. And I would feel terrible handing over my babies after causing them crop issues. You guys are the greatest.

Btw, though, we do use shavings in the coop, I just won't use them to travel bc they were stressed and hungry and she was eating anything she could find. We haven't had any problems with it other than that.

Thanks! I was really debating putting food in with them. Water definitely, but I figured food would just make for a bigger mess. However, I don't want them to be any more stressed then need be. Thanks again

that was my reasoning too.
Depends on how long they'll be out whether they need food. I'm taking some to keep them occupied in case I get any at a swap tomorrow :) glad I could help.

How old are they? How about putting some zucchini or watermelon then they have some food and it's juicy too?

Ok I have a new count on my chickies! 2 BO's and 2 BA's out of 6 eggs so far. Not to shabby for my girls first at being mommy! I'll try and get some new picks tomorrow!
That's GREAT!!! They must be so cute. What's your set up like too? Are they completely by themselves or right in with the others?

That's a great idea. I did food when we had an 8 hour drive, but I just stop to give them water because they spill it too easily. On short drives I don't give them anything.

I too use pine shavings in the coop with no issues, just don't like them for travel.

Thank you all. I think the watermelon will be perfect. I have some and no spilling!! It won't be a very long trip 3-4 hours I think. I think they'll be fine with that. Plus, they seem to eat the most in the morning and less through the afternoon. This will be an afternoon trip.

My favorite age was 28. Love that number. I have friends that say they are younger than they are but I like to say I'm older. If I say I'm 55 people think I look really good for my age

Very cool pic!!
That's a new way to do it, I guess?

That is beautiful!!
I'm always shocked to see an older me when I look in the mirror! In my mind, I'm frozen at 30, which is getting kind of weird since I have a 21 year old son! Lol
It is shocking isn't it, I really do not know how and when I got to 48 yrs old. Guess time flies when you're having fun.

Oh, I liked 28 too. It was the last age that I was able to keep track off. Now, when someone asks me how old I am, I have to do the math. Then I have to figure out if I've had a birthday this year yet, then adjust if necessary! LOL! And I'm 32!

It is nice to see a variety of ages here. I used to think only the old fashioned type kept chickens. Supposedly it's the fastest growing small business. A non-chicken person told me that this week.
Yeah I sometimes have to subtract the year I was born with the current year, Sad but true.

ok, funny story that only my friends here would understand! My landlord had to stop by the house for a bit today to check on an issue I had told him about.

We got to chatting about the garden, etc. He's a nice guy, about my age (I'm turning 40 next week) & when I moved in I made him put in the lease that I could have free reign with the landscaping, put in a garden, etc. So the lease reads that "the tenant can landscape and make changes to the yard without prior permission unless the changes will result in a permanent fixture to the property. No changes should go against any zoning laws or local ordinances." Pretty standard stuff, so that I don't have to ask for permission anytime I want to put in a flower bed.

Well, I hadn't exactly asked him about the chickens because 1 - they weren't inside pets and 2 - the coop wouldn't be a permanent structure to the outside landscaping.

So in the course of our conversation about the garden, he told me that everyone around him is getting backyard chickens and he thought of me with my garden! He asked if I had ever considered it! So I did confess that I had plans and he gave his "blessing" and thought it was a great idea. He just asked that I send him pictures after all the chicks arrive and after the coop is built...and when they start laying eggs, he gets to come by for breakfast one day!

I told him that I could definitely take care of that!

Such a great guy!

Who ya calling old??

Lol My husband, who is 7 years older than me and still thinks I'm a kid, has boots older than you! 32 is a great age, so is 28, so is 48 and so is 50. Whatever your age, embrace it and enjoy it! Time goes so fast!

Forgive me, I'm feeling a little sentimental because my baby girl is graduating from high school on Saturday. I will have 3 kids in college next year. It doesn't seem possible. Good things I have all those chickens to take care of!

My youngest is starting her last year of college and the 2 older boys 25 and 23 are done with college now, guess I started a little earlier then you guys.

That's a great landlord. I can imagine some would say absolutely no chickens. You lucked out big time!!!! But you sound like the perfect tenant too!

That's one of the reason I got chickens... I will need something to mother.

I have one boy going into his 3rd year of college and my other will be a senior in h.s. Next year will be so hard and I'll cherish every minute he's still home with me. He's my little baby. So I can't even imagine your baby girl graduating on Sat. Bitter sweet I'm sure.
Are your kids in college close by or far away? My older one is about 3 1/2 hours away but he's so happy there I can't be sad for me.
Yeah, I got chickens to give myself something else to worry about instead of the kids. It is so hard not to worry about them or to try to direct them in the way you think is right. My daughter is staying with us and going to UNC Charlotte, she wanted to move out, but just can't afford it. Our oldest received a scholarship and left home at 18 to live on campus, it was only 1 hour and a half away, but still too far. He was engaged before the first grades were out. Thank goodness they both decided to wait until they were done with college. Stressful time or us to say the least. Long story short, he has been married 3 years since September, so all turned out well.

Our other son went to UNC Charlotte too and stayed with us until last year and this past December he married his high school sweetheart, they met when he was 14 and she was 13. My son's have kept us on our toes, both daughter-in-laws are great though, so it worked out.

Our daughter is 20 and is focused on college, friends and a career, we still worry about her though!

Good luck with all of you sending your kids off to college! Stressful times!

So, your kids are just a year behind my oldest and youngest, plus I have one in between. My daughter will be 45 mins from home and 5 mins from mine and my husband's work! She's a mama's girl and couldn't stand the thought of being farther from home. My oldest is 2-3 hrs away depending on traffic and my middle son is awaiting a transfer admissions decision from SUNY Cobleskill, which is 3 hours away. So, all fairly close. I really hope my son gets into Cobleskill. It's a great agricultural school and he wants to study animal industry and be an organic dairy cattle and chicken farmer. He is the one who got me started!!
Best of luck!! That is an awesome career too!

Oh that's nice they're close. And I love when kids know what they want to do... and have a passion. He's so lucky he knows!!
I started as Animal Husbandry in college and after I saw the glove they wanted me to put on that came up to my shoulder and I found out what it was for I switched to Biology.

I had no interest in artificially inseminating cows!!!
We're looking at colleges now for my son and the absolute perfect school (Villanova) ... great academics, nice campus, fantastic basketball and football team, perfect size... but it's 10 minutes away!!! LOL, he doesn't want to be that close!!
WooHoo!!!! Good luck with the rest. I hope they hatch!!
Our oldest son did his best to find a campus further away, but he followed the money, so 1 hr and a half ended up being far enough for him. Of course, his wife is from Raleigh NC, so they now live near her family which is 3 hours away.

This is my first year with Cochins and up until this week I have not been to impressed... But I have noticed that the past few days they have not been running from me. They have calmed down so much! My blue one let me walk right up to her and pick her up without making a noise!! The have never done that! Miss blue is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Her lacing has all of a sudden darkened up as well. Another thumbs up for Meyer!
I had a splash on of these and she was the sweetest. Only problem I had with the cochin's was the muddy feet on rainy days.

I've got you beat. Will be 51 in a couple of months. No spring chicken here! :hmm
...and the winner is!!!!

He's in NC with his family. Not sure when we'll get to visit again. :( But, they will be moving up here to PA the beginning of next year. :) He won't get to see the chicks while they are little but I'm hoping to have them calm enough he can pet and be with them when he comes. He'll be 2 in October.

The chicks are doing great! I think my BLRW are the sweetest. They just sit there and let me stroke their backs. The other ones are still jumpy (11 days old) but are getting settled more and more every day as I sit with them and stick my hand in the brooder and just let them do their thing. I think the extra chick I got from Meyer is a barred rock and she seems to want to be the queen of the castle. LOL
That's great that they will move closer. We'll they live on your land too?

We raise beef cattle. Mostly mixes of red angus, black angus, hereford. We started with 35 acres then last year we bought our neighbors property. Not exactly next door, but within walking and RTV distance. ;)

We bought his place to start a custom butcher shop. He built a cooler and cutting room in his basement and we can butcher small scale. His health was declining so he decided to sell.

We've done beef (our own and others), pigs (our own and others) and deer. We only have about 30 cows now. Lost a few over the winter due to old age and what we think might have been plant poisoning on a couple of them. Didn't process those as we didn't know exactly what caused them to die.
I am jealous too, that is so neat!

Ok I couldn't get pics of the buff that hatched last night but I got some of the black australorp that did!

So far the only count I have is 2 chicks hatching but hopefully more! I am getting off work soon so hope to come home to more babies!
So sweet!

Best wishes for a safe. Great ideas from everyone too!

I'll have to check out about how to submit my dust bathing picture to the calendar, no sure how to do that. Glad you guys liked it though!
