Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

I've emailed the initial silkie breeder a couple of times - no response. All my chicken friends locally who have met both birds are convinced they are both boys. Tonight I think I saw a few saddle feathers on Brownie (no waddles).

I do worry about the integration. It's going to be a month before the run is ready & I have no place to keep a full grown girl until then. I think I'm going to have to pass...timing just isn't right. Maybe next year.

It's so hard to wait but I bet something even better comes along. You have your hands full with these little ones I'm sure!!

Belle is one of the started EEs that I got from Meyer seven weeks ago. She was supposed to be from 16-20 weeks at that time, which makes her between 23-27 weeks, now. As I said, she started laying 6 weeks ago and her eggs are usually around 45 grams. I haven't seen much of an increases in weeks. I have read that her eggs might get bigger after her first molt. I guess time will tell.

For both Althea (the BR) and Andre (the BA), I tried to help them empty their crops by massaging them upward and tipping them out to drain. Neither seemed to have any trouble breathing afterward but maybe Althea aspirated without me realizing it? I have been giving all the girls yogurt to try to help with their digestion and more grit. I think you are right about the cause being grass because I did see some come out of Andre when I was tipping her the other day. I actually tried to help her empty some more yesterday afternoon and no sour liquid came out. I took that as a good sign. Her crop was a bit fuller than the others' last night, hopefully, it is near empty this morning! Again, time will tell.

How is Andre this morning?

GOT MILK??

LOL... Awesome pic!! I love how the RIR has it on her chest too!!
It looks like your white EE is right in there with the other girls... They all are getting along?

I now have 5 laying! I got the cutest eggs from my Dominiques, today. Melissa laid her first the other day and second today. Desdemona laid her first today - only 20 grams! Is there a class smaller than Peewee? If so, that was it! They have to be 43 grams to be considered Small! Belle, my older EE, lays eggs that are about 45 grams now. I hope hers will get bigger, but, she has already been laying for 6 weeks. How long before pullet eggs get to be larger?

Sad news, I buried a chicken, today. One of my BRs had sour crop and, unfortunately, died overnight. So sad! She looked so peaceful when I found her this morning on the coop floor. My largest BA, Andre, had it too. She is doing much better, though. I think they both ate a little too much grass and not enough grit. Either that or it was the layer pellets that I just started them on.
Congrats! The Dominiques are great chickens and layers. I had one before but I want another.

I am so sorry about your BR, so hard to lose them. I hope Andre is better now.

Thank you. I just took a photo of our eggs. 3 are from yesterday and 5 from today.

The largest ones are from golden buffs. The green are from Belle the EE and the tiny ones from my 2 Dominiques.
Nice!

Hi, just wanted to post a couple of pics from today....

Our Welsummer's...

Beautiful Welsummers! I want one of those too. Honey is such a neat color, so pretty! That little bunny is the cutest thing ever!! Is that a wild one? Or do you raise rabbits too?

Oh geez. Maybe there still is hope for the one you're not sure about? I am also waiting for next year too, it is hard to wait, but you're just starting out so try to concentrate on the ones you have and getting them all settled in and laying eggs, getting along, etc. Eventually they'll be one flock after awhile and it will be easier to introduce new ones once these are mature. Maybe you'll even have a broody next year to make your job easier.

GOT MILK??

Ha ha so cute!! That white EE really makes me want one, so beautiful!

Just thought I'd put up a pic of my meyer splash cochin
Adorable with her fluffy boots. I used to have a splash one too, her name was Gizmo or Jiggly Puff, my daughter and niece and nephew gave her a variety of names.

Here is a picture of her.

That's about the size my Dominique lays in comparison to my other birds. Mine are all young (between 20-24 weeks). She started laying at 18 weeks, and while her eggs have gotten bigger, they are still a good bit smaller than the other eggs. Not sure if it is an age thing, or a breed thing. She is a Meyer's chick. Very sweet, and a very good layer (usually about 5 eggs a week).

Ha! Giggly Puff, total kids name but also very fitting. Both of your Cochins are beautiful. Cochins are much further down on my wishlist as right now I want more eggs (heck I haven't gotten any yet but I already want more) and don't need another broody breed, though the look so pretty and snuggly! Welsummers and light Easter Eggers are at the top, but one is easier to come by than the other. But I would take a pure white, white with black flecks or a cream and buff like Honey.

Anyone else on here collect feathers from their chickens? I just sorted mine.

Bottom left: Elizabeth aka Baby Buff the Buff Orpington

Bottom right: Amelia the Golden Buff (sex-link) who used to be predominantly white but the ginger has been creeping down her body

I'm saving some for this project on Pinterest which I may or may not have posted here before:

Speaking of feathers I found this behind our coop yesterday morning:

It's a wing feather of a Red Tailed Hawk... yeah suffice it to say I didn't let them free range yesterday and I have been keeping a close eye. I've seen one circling over our yard a few times but now it seems to be stalking them. But I'm glad the bird netting we bought at Lowe's for $5 seems to be doing its job on top of the run. The sides of the run and all the windows and vents of the coop are covered in hardware cloth.

Oh my went to Meyer's website to check on the started pullets and saw that RIRs are available in late August as well as EEs but the EEs are also available tomorrow for pick up only! Chances of convincing the husband very unlikely. Probably would be better off waiting until August... I would have to get two EEs tomorrow as opposed to one EE and a RIR. BR and BA also available for late August and BA available for pick up tomorrow.

MamaShell, may I ask how much your started EE pullets were? Not the shipping just per bird.

I took my son to visit a few colleges the past few days and at one of them they said at Finals time they want the kids to relax so they have therapy dogs come in so they can pet them and relax. And last year they had a petting zoo come that brought Alpacas and chickens for the kids to pet!!
Couldn't help but laugh!!

ARGHHH, I think my Cochin is broody again!!! She just finished molting and started laying again. Sheesh. Back to the cage for her!

Such pretty feathers... I should collect my Brabanter's feathers. They are beautiful!!
Ugh... we have tons of the red tailed hawks here too. Another kind of hawk as well, not sure what it is though. All I know is it is huge! I had one incident with a hawk trying to dive bomb the hens but they all did what they were supposed to do and hid under the bushes. Scared the heck out of me though. It made me realize how useless I absolutely useless I am standing out there with them. If they hadn't scattered I'm not sure what help I would have been. I'm glad the netting is working!! I really think that's all you need for the top of the run as long as that's all you are trying to keep out. Even if it landed on the netting it would get caught up in it and the girls would scatter.

Thanks for asking! @LynnEBC, thanks for asking about Andre, as well! I started replying to your posts this morning and somehow never submitted. It was one of those days!

Andre appears to be doing well. Her tail feathers were back up, she was moving around as well as the others - not falling asleep standing up in the middle of the run like the other day, and her crop appeared to be normal size. I think she has made it through. I will continue to give all of the birds yogurt at least once a week to help their digestion and, of course, make sure they have plenty of grit!

Boo, my white EE, is still a little gun shy around the other girls. There are a few that continue to peck at her and try to scare her away but, they are not as bad as when I first moved her into the big coop, and when they do try to bully her, she now moves just far enough to get out of their way but does not hide under the coop all day. So, that is a relief! She is adorable and I hated to see her picked on! So, all in all, I think the integration went well.

Oh, sorry about your Cochin being broody, again. Hard to believe!

Isn't touring Colleges fun? I think I went to at least 8 different campuses for each of my 3 kids. I could run an admissions program, now!

My only Andalusia (splash) laid her first egg today! She is my first laying white egg layer.

It's next to one of my barred rock girls that's the same age. They are 23 weeks old. The BR started a few days ago. The Andalusia egg is not really white but more like a cream color. But still very exciting.

Not sure what is going on tonight, but cannot quote people so here are the answers to the questions I received.

Notable Nancy - Honey was more white and a little buff, maybe a pale buff

eurekachic - agreed! They are only 14 weeks old imagine what their feathering and coloring will be as the mature!

Autumnhearth - Just two Wellies, just multiple pics of both, one is more orange-goldish brighter and the other more brownish. Here is a pic of them free ranging together.

Mamashell - well they have been quiet and reserved, not super friendly, until this week. Now Saffron (the one on the back of the coop) is a camera hog. She is ways posing when I start taking pics! They are becoming more curious and seem to want attention. I think her sisters name will be nutmeg or ginger....Honey, she is coming into her own now, she used to be shy and reserved, she still doesn't like to be held. But when she does she sings, thus her name, sweet honey. It seems that now as they are free ranging I am seeing more of their personalities emerging. Actually the RR are about the same size, the one with thinner legs is a little taller but thinner. The other is more broad and we noticed his waddles and comb are more pronounced. Plus we are starting to see the roo (shown in second pic) get into stand off's and skirmishes with both buff orph's. I have a video of one this am, right now it is the pecking order being decided. So I have been spending lots of time watching observing as it will be my decision to make, according to my bf.

LynnEBC - yes the Welsummer's are really starting to be pretty,I thought they where a partridge rock at first as they were brown. Honey is a cutie (we thought she was an exotic for awhile but her green legs gave her away) all the EE have personality and I find the more time I spend with them the more they are getting more friendly. Oh and it is a wild bunny we have tons around here.
