Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Here's a sneak peek of our kitchen. It is finally looking like a kitchen again.

I am not allowed to blog pictures yet, since family members view the blog and we want them to visit and see all the work we have done, so I'll brag a little to all my chicken friends out there. I hope that you don't mind.

I hung the flowered wall paper on the left empty wall yesterday. Today I hung up the wallpaper back splash. It is a textured wallpaper in shades of tan/brown although the picture does not show it. They'll be another bottom cabinet by the stove on the left. Now if I can figure out how to clean up the black part with the dials on my stove and microwave so they do not look so smudged. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Back to chickens, we'll be back to higher temps this week, so I guess I can relax on the cold temps for another week. I plan on buying this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HHLIXY/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3DXN8WRFCXWRA to add to my nipple watering system, but right now it is out of stock. I know some of you were talking about heated water for the chickens.

I think the large nipple system holds one and a half gallons of water, then it refills from the hose. So I probably would have to refill the water each morning but then it wouldn't freeze with the heater after that. If I left the hose hooked up, the hose of course would freeze unless I got a heated hose too, which I am sure will not be happening anytime soon since they are not cheap. I'm glad that here in NC we do not have too many freezing days.
Really nice. I love your cabinets. Shows that it has been a work of love. As for the smudges. When we bought this place the stove had that stuff around and behind the knobs that is all but impossible to clean. We tried Mr Clean Magic Eraser for appliances and it worked like a charm...with a little added elbow grease.

Meyers BCMs eggs are beautiful. Not as dark as I dreamed about but I still love them. Just thought I would post to show those that wonder how dark they are. The middle row is BCMs and the other two dark ones are welsommers the rest are barred rocks and blue Cochins.

They are way darker than I was expecting! Any eggs from the ameraucana girls yet??

Love the cabinets. I'm jealous you are getting a new kitchen but not of the hassle and work. lol
The counters and floors in the kitchen are on our "eventually" list. I have finishing work on the upstairs bathroom floor and we're going to start on the main level half bath floor soon. The half bath is huge so I'm not really looking forward to it. Plus we want to replace the vanity when we do it so that's another expense I don't really feel like throwing money toward at the moment. Especially with DH getting laid off at the end of next month!

Hopefully since you don't have a deep freeze like we can the nipple system will be fine. I've read a lot of people say even with the heated water the nipples themselves still froze since they are metal and exposed to the cold. Hope you have better luck.

My heated dog dish should arrive sometime this week. I love that it is thermostatically controlled so it won't be on all the time or I don't have to run out and turn it on/off.

@NotableNancy

Oh yes! I buy whatever squash is on sale! If I'm going to eat it, I feed them the insides. If I don't eat it, I just cut it in half. They eat it all!

I still use the same flock block recipe that was posted here. I am pretty happy with it. I change it up all the time based on what I have around. I can post the recipe when I get home.

Do you really think peppy will one day roost in the coop? I really hope so. He just seems so happy out in the run. Although I've scared him awake every morning this week going out to open the pop door. I think it makes him nervous that he is away from the rest of them and can't watch them. If I startle him enough, he starts crowing. And this is 330am! I hope my neighbors are sleeping soundly LOL!!
I'll look the flock block recipe up... I know there's a bunch on here. Headed to feed store this week so I may pick up a small bag of that Omega 3 feed up for it. Spoiled little girls :)
AND why are you getting up at 330????? Maybe you have to put him in the coop for a few nights and see what happens?

We have 6 that area around 18mo - they are the ones going through the full body molts and all have looked/look horrific. The rest are around 7 months old. They should be laying but one is sick, one was terrorized by the roosters before we got rid of Dinner, and I don't know why the others aren't laying. Wish they would hurry up and start again. Sucks feeding something that isn't contributing anything!

I've read the birds go through their first large molt at 18 mo.
I heard this too but of my 5 19-month olds only 1 is molting. I'm hoping the others don't start when it gets really cold out.

I just bought a huge pumpkin for my chickens yesterday.

It does help to complain on here. They gave me 8 eggs yesterday. It appears the molt is approaching an end in the next few weeks. That's still not much from 21 egg layers but it's a start.

Let me just complain again. I still have no white eggs from my 6 white egg layers.

I'll be sure to take pictures of my girls with their pumpkin whenever I get around to cutting it for them.

My kitchen remodel is still progressing, slowly but it's progressing. We have all the top cabinets up, I hung the wall paper on the one clear wall and over the window. Today I am putting in the wallpaper back splash which I will coat with a lot of clear sealer once it dries.
Tomorrow we hope to install the bottom cabinets. Then the counter top some time after, trim, crown molding, floor. etc. Geez, still so much to do. Sorry to complain on here.....Hoping we get a sink in soon, you never know how important a kitchen sink is until it's gone.
Complain away!! Hopefully the white egg layers start for you soon. My Cochin had a pretty hard molt about 2 months ago but started back laying eggs before all the feathers grew in again. So hopefully yours don't wait till completely feathered. Does your store have the Feather Fixer feed? Maybe give that a try?

Gorgeous color!!!

GREAT job on the kitchen!! I'm sure it feels like it is going painfully slow but look how much is done. Having a sink will make it so much easier. Can't imagine not having that :(

I'm going to try that Mr Clean Magic Eraser... thanks for the tip!

LOL! I was not getting up at 330, I was leaving for work! You get used to it. I may try moving Peppy once the little ones are more settled. They are going in the coop themselves, but not roosting yet. Just huding together. Peppy is definitely maturing . He did the one-dropped-wing thing today to one of the little ones. I really hope he stays friendly, not that he's cuddly, but he is respectful and gorgeous if I do say so myself!

BTW congrats on your Silkie being a girl!!!!

Glad Patty Patty is a girl!

I second the magic eraser, we use it on our stove.

I'm thinking something must be stealing eggs, or group egg eating. We haven't had a single egg out of 50+ hens in almost 2 weeks. I understand the few older ones that are molting, but there are younger ones that were laying great a little while ago. Last year our young ones slowed down a little but never stopped in the winter, and this is pretty early in the season to stop completely. So... I'm going to put some mustard eggs and some wooden eggs. If they are broken we'll know there's some eating going on, if they go missing we'll know something is taking them.

And when I say molting I mean a hard molt...

With 50+ birds even with molt you should be getting some eggs. Let us know what you discover. I have 22 and even with shorter days I am still getting 12-15 eggs daily. So someone or something is hijacking your production.

Nice, didn't feed our the pumpkin today, as I forgot and it was in the car. Besides bf had a batch of farmers cheese ready for them so they got that instead and other scraps for dinner. Will be curious to see if we get more eggs tomorrow since they got a boost of protein today. Their coats look better today after feeding them tuna dn quinoa yesterday plus their normal feed. I can tell when my girls need s boost of proteins based on their coats, not fluffy, not as shiny and their demeanor, they are frantic and hyper like they need something. Anyway, after feeding farmers cheese they were calm and happy. So we will see if they give more eggs. We got 19 yesterday, we are averaging 18 a day now. I am going to be playing with their feed just a little and see if putting out more feed increases eggs the next day.

Love the lightness of colors in your kitchen remodel.

From my understanding of the egg production system in a chicken you might have to wait 2 days to see a difference. Eggs take 24 hours to produce so tomorrows eggs were already in production today when you fed. Unless of course you feed at 9am and they don't lay until after 9am the next day it may make a difference, but my guess is a change would take effect the next day. It's like a bird that gets hurt or goes into shock, they will often lay an egg the next day because it was already in process, but then they stop.
Just guessing though. Let us know what you find!
