Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

:D Mango is *so cute*!!!

Here are the three started pullets I got from Meyer.

Two Golden Buffs, and a Barred Rock. I'm thrilled that they are eating out of our hands and have such calm temperaments. I do wish their beaks had not been trimmed though.

Ohhh, your Golden Buff look pretty close to laying! Very Cute girls.
What is that you are using for bedding? Looks interesting... AND clean!!!!
Best of luck with them :)

Thanks! :D
I hope so- am excited to get eggs hopefully soon!
The bedding is wood shavings from my husband's work. He is a fine woodworker, and they produce a lot of sawdust and shavings. A local farmer comes and picks up bags for his chickens, so we figured we would use them too. Can't beat the cost of free. However, I am concerned about the amount of dust. I am thinking of making a sifter using old window screen to try and sift the shavings from the fine particulate before adding it into the hen house to reduce dust.
Also thinking of mixing straw in to help keep dust down.

I use the large pine shavings and we all know how dusty they can be. I top off with about an equal amount of straw. The chickens take care of mixing it all together. And, my dust is cut at least in half if not more.

Here are pics of our Golden Buff, Ginger. She is our best layer and we sometimes get purplish eggs from her or white spotted eggs. Most times her eggs are pretty dark though and she always lays extra large eggs. She has skipped only a day here and there when molting but consistently lays an egg every day.

She was a curious chick from the beginning. Very friendly too.

When free ranging, she is the very last to go in the coop, one night she was left out all night long and enjoyed it. I now have to go and pick her up and put her in the coop since everyone goes to bed way before her. She is very easy to pick up since she is so friendly. I would get more of this breed, I'll probably add one every other year since they are such reliable layers.

Pretty girls, the contrast of the girl on the left is very striking. Good to hear how friendly they are!

. Hi all - here are the juvenile Golden Buffs I received last week from Meyer. They're supposed to be between 16 - 20 weeks, and I definitely think they're toward the younger side based on their combs. They're slowly starting to trust me. They finally figured out they should go in the coop at dark, though we're working on the whole roosting part!

Nice! I like the darker red color, like a RIR with a white tail. If I had a second I would want one like that for contrast. Well they were floor raised but hopefully they will take to the roosting soon :)

So my poor husband is having a hard time picking a chicken breed for the the spring. He said he would let me know by the end of the week but teased breeds throughout the weekend, changing his choice mid sentence. At first I thought he was just teasing me, then he pretended he didn't want to tell me, like why did I have to know, he could just place the order. Then he would admit he hadn't decided. Really though, he is struggling with guilty at wanting a more snuggly chicken, like it is unfair to Victoria. I told him he could just pick a breed, but it didn't have to be "his chick" or he could forfeit his spot and I'll get a breed for the neighbors, but I refuse to order just two. He is leaning toward a Brahma, he liked the Buff better at first and didn't want the Light since Rowan is getting a white chicken but today he said the Buff may look too similar to our Buff Orp and Golden Buff and blames me for even thinking that way, lol! I prefer the light myself.

LOL! He's hooked, thinking about colors. DH thinks I'm crazy although he did want another BR when ours died. Apparently that was his favorite chicken. Who knew.

They're kidding themselves if they think they are not hooked. My hubby keeps asking if he is getting his purple chicken in the spring. Oops...I forgot to order HIS chicken.
Personally I like the light brahmas better because of the contrast. They do not seem at all like a white chicken because there is so much lacing. I do like the buff too. My buff is more timid than my light. But that could just be an individual thing.

:) My husband doesn't pretend to not be attached to the chickens, it was his idea to get the chickens this year, I always wanted them but didn't think we could have them in town. But he was hard to convince that we should get more and he calls my need to plan feather and egg color ridiculous. Lavender Orpington was/is in the running for him as well as other blue and splash varieties. But I think he has decided he doesn't want any duplicate breeds yet (though we love our Buff Orp). Him choosing a Brahma doesn't surprise me though, he was admiring their size at the county fair and he is the one who picked out a Dorking afterall. Big regal funny footed chickens suit him. He did really like the idea of a Sussex but "couldn't get over the speckles". So I think a Light Brahma is a good compromise. We'll see how he's feeling about it tonight. I'm itching to order, only 52 Welsummer females left on our date, if it was in the teens I would be worried.
