Happy thanksgiving to all of you! Will any chickies get a special thanksgiving treat?? We celebrated thanksgiving on Sunday (because I work retail) and my bunch have never seen so many scraps. That's always fun to watch.

That's a great picture of Mango, so cute.

Cute little cheeky human chick behind Marigold too!

Thank you, same to all of you too!!! We're in the East but more Southeast so we have cold weather here, but it is a beautiful and sunny 47 degrees now.

Ours had a special treat of leftovers last week when we had an early Thanksgiving at our house. Today I am not cooking and going to have dinner with the in laws, so a very relaxing Thanksgiving!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!!!!!!

We've placed our order for March 9th! One Welsummer, White Rock and Light Brahma! Oh oh oh! And it's your pics of Olive that settled it, he liked all the black splashes throughout, good thing I didn't call it lacing, he doesn't like strong lacing, lol. He thought she looked a little blue tinted especially next to Kiwi. You had an older Light Brahma with Apricot, yes? What was her name?

I think she will look nice with the solid white, solid black, silver grey and our EE's black neck plus Amelia's white lacing, whereas a Buff Brahma would have been too close to our Buff Orp. I'm happy. Thinking of Cornelia for my Welsummer's name. Nickname Cora or Nell, Nellie the Wellie... well maybe not. I love everyone's Welsummer names on here but am going to wait to do food and spice names for larger flocks, I do love Mabel though. My great-grandfather's sisters' names were Mable and Maude. Other options are Amabel, Fenna, Fulla, Gerda, Greta, Hazel and Penelope. But I'm getting ahead of myself, the long wait for March begins.
Yay... March 9th will be here before you know it. I have a whole page in a notebook with potential names for future hens. Penelope is my fav.... I'm saving that name for a super amazing girl!

Since I'm getting a small incubator for the Holidays, I'm already trying to figure out what kind of eggs I want to hatch :)

I know I want Tolbunt Polish, especially with some frizzles in there. I have a friend who wants some feather leg varieties, so I'm thinking light brahma as well.

BUT, the big news from my existing flock is that - I now have 5 squatters!

Gizmo & Gidget have been squatting for about a week - non-Meyer's CCL

Today saw others join the squatting legions:
Doc McCluckins - BO
Collette - BCM
Esmeralda - SLP

STILL NO EGGS though & I'm searching around the run for signs of a hidden clutch! There is evidence that they are checking out their nest boxes though... Maybe they are waiting for turkey day?>>
I'm sure it will be any day now! How old are they?? I'll tell ya, I've had chickens for 1 yr. and 8 months and it's still fun to go out and collect eggs. Even in the cold!! I hope you get some pretty blue eggs!!!

I can't wait to see your CCL eggs too!! We've had one day with 5 eggs since the molting started. Other days just 2 or 3. Needless to say, we're not giving away or selling any lately.
At least you're getting a few :) Did you enter your EE in the molting contest? She looked like she could have been a contender.

No special treat for my girls... I'll make them a flock block this weekend after I hit the feed store. They won't know it's a few days after thanksgiving

Maybe my MIL will let me take the turkey carcass home for the girls.

Speaking of carcass.... Has anyone just put a whole turkey carcass in the coop/run for them? I'm afraid of them choking on a bone like a dog would but I've heard people do it.

The CCL are 22 weeks now (will be 23 weeks next week), the other (Meyers) are 19 weeks (will be 20 weeks Saturday), though I do have a few later maturing breeds (Orpingtons & Wyandottes).

I can say that going out every day, at least twice a day, I hold my breath hoping for eggs! It is fun & I will squeal when I get my 1st one!

I'm planning on putting the carcass out there for a little while...I don't think they will choke, just clean it!

I've been spoiled by my girls... my first 2 times I got batches of chicks I had one lay the day they turned 18 weeks! An RIR the first time and my CCL the second. Now I'm on my 3rd batch that are 16 1/2 weeks and just expect them to lay when they turn 18 but I know I shouldn't. I do have early laying breeds this time though... Golden Buff and Ex Leghorn! So hopefully :)
I have so many people wanting eggs from me now. 3 steady customers and then my family will want them for the Christmas season and baking. I'm not sure how well my girls will come through.

It was funny.... my DH is always up before me and I woke up to a pic on my phone of an egg in the nest the very first time I had an egg layer. I threw on my clothes and ran out to the coop squealing with delight. The very next morning I woke to a pic on my phone of 2 eggs in the nest and one was green!!! I went running out there and my DH couldn't understand why I was so excited. I said omg... 2 eggs and one is a green egg!! And he said, no there's only one egg. So I showed him the pic and I opened the nest box lid there were the 2 eggs in there... one brown and one green. He was shocked... when he took the pic he didn't even see the green egg. He thought there was just the one!

These were the eggs from that day next to a white ex-large egg. Can't wait till my RIR starts laying again... love her dark eggs. She has been molting stopped for about 4-5 weeks now.

@LynnEBC
That little human chick is my youngest, Kaiden Jack :) all he says now is "I hold baby chicks! Jack hold baby chicks!"

Hope you all stay warm! It's a lovely day in Hawaii and I'm sending you all "stay warm" vibes!

I also thought I'd share a funny with yall. My two older girls (9 week old Ameraucana mixes) I got locally are too funny! Do they head back to their coop at night when the sun goes down???
400

NOPE! They come to my front door EVERY SINGLE NIGHT AT SUNSET TO HAVE ME CARRY THEM BACK TO THEIR COOP!!

And here is one last pic. My girls all asleep on their brooder perch

Except Scarlett (RIR) who's trying to wake everyone up
