Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Hope everyone and their chickens stay safe tomorrow with the dangerous windchills! There is no school here tomorrow and it is looking like 0 degrees at 8am with a windchill of -19, yikes! May let the girls eat breakfast in the coop. Morgaine and Victoria are snuggly warm inside the brooder. Victoria is so sweet, she instinctually lays down right next to Morgaine whenever she moves. At one point this evening they were beak to beak. Bosom buddies :)

We've already had the cold weather here. It was freezing out today. My hands were frozen after feeding the animals this morning. We should be at 46 tomorrow. Looking forward to some sun and warmth!

And finally the corn grinder my husband brought back works very well. He remembers using for hours as a boy at his grandfather's farm for the pigs and birds. So we ground the feed to a nice size, fine enough that they aren't picky about the pieces of corn and peas and coarse enough that I don't need to add water like the mash, thank goodness! So next step is to ask the local gal who has the feed mixed if I can buy 100 lbs whole from her so we can grind it at home in small quantities to our desired texture. That would make me feel really good!
That's so neat that you have a grinder now to grind your own food. I hope that Morgaine is improving?

I would love to but we keep our house way to cold to do it. Even the basement gets pretty cool.

Stinkin' hawks. Are you free ranging them now? I remember you stopped for a while.
Are you planning on ordering chicks from Meyer or are you buying from a TSC near you?
Hope everyone's chickens bounce back. Our girl with the eye is still having trouble but nothing like before.

I just thought I'd give everyone an update on our disaster. I don't want to retype it all. Not trying to make a plea for money from you guys, but our story is up on http://igg.me/at/flamingarrowfarm/x if you are interested in reading about it and seeing pics (I forgot to put pics of our bedroom/bathroom which had the wood floors cut out of them). I don't know how much I'll post in the next week or so, but I'm trying to keep up with my reading. If you can share the campaign I'd be grateful.
I hope your chicken recovers soon, sounds like you need a lot less worries now. So sorry to hear about your flood, that's terrible! I hope things work out for you.

BTW, if anyone on this thread wants the remote additive system for the chicken fountain, I'm willing to give mine away for the cost of shipping. I realize I just do not need it. I will probably post it for sale in the BST area if there are no takers here. Just wanted to offer it to my favorite peeps first!
Thank you for the offer. I really find no need for it either, I hope that you find someone to buy it from you.

Meyers had me send more pics of Isis. They're saying maybe an Easter egger (which she does NOT look like) or black orpington ?
I think she looks like my other black AM except the comb, or an australorpe
She looks like my BA too. I know EE's can look like anything and some even do not have fluffy cheeks and beards either. Guess you will not know for sure until she lays an egg.

Victoria keeping Morgaine company. She was hiding out in the nest box for the last couple days anyway. The other three are laying well.
Victoria is just gorgeous! She is like a beautiful chicken sculpture sitting there.

We're at 10 degrees this am, which is cold for us in NC.

Stay warm!! That is crazy cold!! I hope that your two chickens heal up quick.

46? That's awesome. We'll be back to normal on Sunday, but in the teens here the next few days.

Well I unplugged the chicken fountain from the hose and left in the bird bath heater. Unfortunately the bird bath heater did not heat the whole system and the nipples were frozen solid. I guess for the next few days I'll have to bring water out to them until the above freezing weather comes back. I may need to get one of those heated pipe wraps to ensure that the nipples do not freeze.

I was going to just add water to the system throughout the day, but that will not work with the nipples being frozen, so I just gave them a container full of water and will refill it throughout the day. I wonder how long it will take for the water to refreeze and how many times I have to go out there and add water. good thing that I work from home.

She could be a black EE, we have a clean faced Easter Egger. She has no muff or beard at all, the rest of ours all have the muffs/beards. I am leaning towards a BA, my understanding that often times it is common for hatchery birds to have pea combs, rather than the breed standard comb. Just happens with hatchery stock.

Hope eveyone back east is staying warm, man you guys are taking a beating with the cold.

Had last consult with hand specialist and I will be having wrist surgery. They will remove 3 - 3 1/2 millimeters of my bone in my forearm, move the bones down, plate and screws in arm. Looking at 8 weeks of no weight bearing activities, no pulling/pushing/lifting more than two pounds. :( . Tired of surgeries, but being a former competitive gymnast,I have done damage to my body!

Good luck with your surgeries. You're a "former competitive gymnast" ?!...well, no wonder! Geez, so sorry that you have to go through all that!

I hope the surgery is successful and that you mend quickly!

Yep was a child competitive gymnast, I would warn anyone who has children who want to be a gymnast, don't let them! At least not competitively, it is sooooo hard and damaging to a young child's still developing body.

I hope the surgery is successful and that you mend quickly!
Thank you, haven't seen you for a bit. Hope your well, or maybe I missed your posts.

Hey gang,

So I am looking to streamline a few things for the flock to help make it easier on my boyfriend for my surgery in a couple weeks, So looking at waterers and dealing with that in below 0 temps. I am curious if anyone on here has experience with the horizontal nipples?

If so, how did they do I the freezing cold, did they freeze?

Did you use them with a bucket?

Did you get submersible heater for the bucket to keep from freezing? If so which brand did you use?

Right now I am leaning towards the horizontal nipples (as I have heard the nipples don't freeze like the vertical ones can), with a bucket system and a submersible heater/de-icer. Will set up three waterers possibly. Any feedback would've greatly appreciated.

Will be installing several PVC style feeders as well,so we can maybe fill the feeders one once a week or so.

Thanks!

Edited because my grammar sucked! Lol

How is Morgaine feeling?

This morning Morgaine is standing taller, walking longer and complaining louder (a good sign, she *loves* to complain). When I lifted the lid to the brooder she jumped up on and though she was a bit wobbly she managed to perch there, then stepped onto my arm. She also jumped up onto one of the chairs and is sitting there preening with Victoria! I was worried yesterday that I still hadn't seen her preen. Yesterday she started pecking around with more interest and I just saw her scratching! She still walks a bit stiffly and is clearly more comfortable laying down, but I think she has beat her depression! So the two girls will be going back outside tomorrow when its warmer.

I think having Victoria there really helped her. Yesterday I had to bring Amelia in to put some ointment on her comb, I set her down with the girls and immediately they both stood up an started pecking at her, so I pulled Amelia out. It seems the two of them can get along fine, but add a third and order must be established. We'll see if Morgaine can hold her position at the top of the pecking order, sometimes it looks like Victoria is thinking about pecking her but she hasn't yet. Though she has been flapping her wings and chasing the cat around the house (our indoor cat, I was able to get a hold of the warden and take the stray to the animal shelter before the cold snap, I will miss its sweet face greeting me everyday but I'm glad its safe and warm).

Oh I also noticed a couple days ago that Victorias dropping are very narrow and tube shaped and observed that she was very tightly squeezing them out. I tried to check out her vent but as she has the longest tail and one of the fluffier bottoms it was hard and when I touched her she freaked out and no wonder she had half a dozen pin feathers growing very close to her vent, poor girl, she probably couldn't push an egg out if she needed to. Makes even more sense that they don't lay when they are molting! Otherwise she seems good. She's very mischievous and determined, one day I had to keep chasing her out of the kitchen. She loves jumping up on furniture but she is so sweet and calm with Morgaine. She's not gregariously snuggly like Baby but a really nice companion bird :)

I haven't tried the horizontal nipples but would love to hear from others about it. The vertical ones froze on us in November even with a submersible warmer/de-icer, we tried several, will have to look up which one we have now. We switched to a big plastic waterer from TSC (again need to look up which one, will edit on computer). The bottom ring would still freeze and I was having to break it up a few times a day until we placed one of those seed warming mats underneath. Now the two work together to at least have a patch of non-frozen water near the opening where the water comes out. I feel better about going down to Florida next weekend (husband will be staying in Ohio but he works all day). That's probably not all that helpful for you but wanted to share the frustration and minor triumph, lol.

Good luck in your surgery and recovery! I wasn't at all surprised when you said you were a gymnast, from a couple of the pics with your flock, you definitely have the body type.
