I noticed today that Victoria's comb is getting bigger. It seriously shrunk down when she started molting in December, which is probably lucky since she didn't get frostbite nearly as bad as Morgaine and Amelia. She is also squatting extra frequently. I'm hoping she's almost over her molt and we'll be seeing her little white eggs soon! Baby was taking an extra long time to lay this afternoon, then proceeded to sit on her egg. I basically had to roll her out of the nest box, then she just sat there and continued it strew straw about herself. Picking her up and setting her down in the snow snapped her out of that broody state of mind.
I ordered starter feed for the new chicks as well as more whole grain layer for the big girls, they go through it so fast! I poked around a bit on Countryside Organic's website before checking out and found American Hemp bedding which I hadn't heard of before. I clicked a link to their website, watched a video: http://www.americanhempllc.com/#!poultry-chicken-bedding/c22br and was sold! I've been trying to get Koop Clean and/or Coconut Cowboy carried at my local store with no luck. I was thinking of buying ground coconut husks from the pet store in the reptile department for the brooder. But this sounds like it will work great for both brooder and coop. And since my shipping price doubled when I went up to 75 lbs of feed (25 of starter, 50 of layer) but the 30 lb bedding was only an extra $3 in shipping I figured I best make the most of it. Picking up the babies next Monday!
