I'm just getting back into chickens after an absence of a few years. RIRs have always been my favorite breed so I've been looking around for sources. Most that I've seen are rather washed-out looking compared to my old girls...until I looked at the Meyer site. Their px look like Reds are supposed to look.

Is anyone on BYC actually raising their Reds? Can you tell me if they look like those px or are those really just stock px? I just want to avoid setting myself up for disappointment.

Thanks!

I have a Rhode Island Red from Meyers. She’s about four years old now. She is the chicken in the foreground of my avatar...it’s only her face though. She is beautiful—deep red, very nice shape to her (not “chubby” looking like my buff orp) and she has a lovely comb and wattles. And she is my most reliable layer as well.

So I asked Meyers if the RIR photos on their site are stock pix or their own stock and was told they are shots of their own breeding stock. This leaves me hopeful of typey RIRs. I'm not expecting show stock or anything--just birds that actually look like nice, dark RIRs. Time will tell. Now I guess I better finish that new coop so I can order some chicks!

Thanks for your help!
