MGG's Hatching Thread!

I lost nine eggs last night they were all fertile I am so upset I have 12 left with movement development I think it's because my humidity keeps dropping and going up dropping and going up I am so sad right now.
Oh no!!! Is the temp holding steady enough?
Somewhere a little bigger some were really small I am a failure.
You aren't a failure. It happens to everyone. Heck, it just happened to me.
MGG My dad is angry at me he thinks I touch them too many times but I don't I candled them on 7 days there were all good didn't touch them and I candled them on the 14th day is that right or am I not supposed to do it at all.
Aww! :hugs
No, that's right. I honestly touch them way more than you, I candle every other day. I have never had a problem with it. I hand turn sometimes too, and then I have to touch them 5 times a day.

The temp is always 99.5 never changes but the humidity dropped a couple times and I think that's what happened and then when I put water in it raised really high but not higher than 50 I just have to keep up my eye on the humidity. I actually open them up and I didn't want to but they look not developed at all just one little black dot in each and goo I don't like doing that. And they were all fertile.

Do you have an additional calibrated thermometer in the incubator though?

My broody just took her first trip out with the chicks. Little scary. She desperately wanted to take a dust bath but the chicks kept trying to get under her. They also didn't understand to stay clear when she scratches the ground. But eventually they all got food and water and then she sat back down on them. Is it normal for her to sit on them to warm them just anywhere on the ground? She just sat down in the middle of the run and let them all crawl under her. But at first she got confused when they didn't follow her right away and other chickens would come in curiously and peck the chicks. Eventually she figured out that was happening and very angrily pecked and chased away my rooster and ducks. But I put her back in the nest instead of in the run to warm the chicks. I guess they are all learning and thats why the first time went a little choppy. Hopefully it will get better soon. But she does seem a little overworked. She could barely manage keeping track of all the chicks. There are two that are a lot smaller and weaker. I might take those two from her and brood them myself. I really have been wanting to try socializing a chick so much it becomes like a friendly little lap chicken. Anyways, thats the situation with my chicks 😂

Is everyone else's doing well I hope?

Yup! Mine did it anywhere. Even on a pallet. That was kind of funny, because the chicks kept falling through the slats, and the mama kept freaking out because her chicks were disappearing. 🤣
She eventually figured out not to warm her chicks up on the pallet, lol!

It sounds really fun and all, but it's really not a good idea. I tried it. The chicken was so sweet, but crazy clingy. If I left to go anywhere, she'd get depressed. She was so lonely. I had to go on a trip with my family, so I started integrating her in with another chicken. My poor girl didn't know how to "be" a chicken. She hated the other hen, and it seemed to make her more upset. The hen who I had put in with her was upset because she missed the flock. So I just put them both in with the flock (I was leaving the next day) and the caretaker told me that she was just laying in a corner. She was fine, the other birds just completely ignored her. It's like the others didn't even know she was there. She was so lonely, she didn't get along with the other birds and they paid no attention to her whatsoever. I tried to raise another bird for her that was just as tame, nothing worked out. I had a chicken who couldn't stand being alone, and who couldn't even live a chicken's life. Eventually, one of my other hens killed her overnight. She was probably trying to snuggle under one and got attacked. She just didn't fit in, it was so sad. If you want to raise a tame one, raise at least two together so one will have a chicken friend. I felt so bad for my poor girl, she was never accepted.

Sounds like it was eventful, lol!

Yep! Everyone is good here. I have another broody. She's been sitting on rocks for 2 days. 🤣
